The Quiet Eye is a book of great charm, imbued with a love and understanding of art that speaks directly to the heart. The thirty-three pictures selected by the American sculptress Sylvia Shaw Judson cover a wide spectrum of subjects and styles, from the seventh century to the modern day. They include works by artists ranging from Durer and Brueghel to Rousseau and Klee, pottery and sculpture from ancient Greece, Oriental scrolls and wall paintings, and are accompanied by quotations from Plato and Shakespeare to Wordsworth and Walt Whitman. In making her choice, Sylvia Judson's intention was "to communicate a sense of affirmation, of wonder, of trust. This is a spirit alien to much of the art of our insecure time, but one which I am confident will some day return." The Quiet Eye was first published as a large format art book in 1954, when it won immediate acclaim. The author selected 33 pictures with the intention “to communicate a sense of affirmation, of wonder and trust.” I think and feel that she does this well. This is a wonderful and inspirational little book that could be used as a basis for daily meditation for just over a month….and then repeat it and see another set of wonders!
I was given a copy of this book while I was in my mid-teens: it struck me then as the kind of book which I did not quite know how to use, but one which I ought not let slip away; some decades later I can say with confidence that it will be with me until I die. It has become one of those homely things which reminds me who I am - and although its images and words are few, and those but glimpses, its attentiveness to stillness and to detail give it a kind of presence which is rare. It is a place of refreshment and of groundedness; and it is spiritual in the very purest and best sense. ( )

(of Introduction) If those whose tradition has placed the emphasis on spiritual at the expense of aesthetic values could enjoy this book for its aesthetic quality, and those who are usually interested only in aesthetic values could find in it a spiritual quality, I should feel rewarded.
