elbakerone: Though Banks' novel is set in present day (and is considerably shorter), the love story with the gorgeous backdrop of Scotland was reminiscent of Gabaldon's series.

I enjoy novels that take place in Scotland and involve ancient legends and history. However, this particular novel fell flat for me. The story seemed rushed and there wasn't much depth to the characters. Some of the dialogue seemed out of place in the novel and didn't fit with the rest of the dialogue. It would abruptly take me out of the story (especially the dialogue with the Baker family in SC). It's a good premise, but the execution didn't quite pull me in. ( )

I was disappointed. Doesn't come close to the complexity and depth of Outlander. The characters and settings seemed two dimensional. ( )

During Christmas dinner, Nicole Baker’s Grandfather drops the bomb. They aren’t who they think they are. Their ancestors are not actually Baker’s, but Minary’s. Nicole decides after her graduation that she will spend some time in Scotland researching the family history of the Minary name but when she arrives she finds that maybe the name has been misspelled and it is actually Minory with an O not an A. Nicole then finds that there is a centuries old curse that surrounds the Minory name and she may be the only one who can break it.

I loved this book, well except for some of the language. I felt it was a bit strong at points, but the rest of the story was great and I could overlook the small amount of language sprinkled through. The supernatural side of the story made my imagination soar and the normal side of the story made me think “what if”. The thought of having such a long history and having it attached to a legend would be very intriguing.
I have always yearned to go to the land of my ancestors. I read anything I can get my hands on Scottish and even though this is a work of fiction I still found that it kept my attention and my imagination full to overflowing. “leas leabhar” (I hope I used that correctly)
My léirmheas is 4 1/2 stars! ( )

I am not normally a reader of romance fiction, but I very much enjoyed this book. The story is modern and the romance is nicely tempered by the supernatural elements. I also enjoyed the touches of humor in the story. ( )

This book had a little bit of everything romance, hate, paranormal, mystery and handsome men. When I started reading this book I found that I could not put it down, I wanted to just keep reading. The plot had some twists that I did not really expect but I truly enjoyed this book. ( )
