Now finished all 10 books in this collection, and liked them enough to buy the last three in the series plus a book of short stories (one of which would have been handy to read in the right place chronologically as the novel that follows it felt a bit weirdly like you'did missed something the whole way through). I really enjoyed the series though I might not have got into it so much if I hadn't encountered the True Blood TV show first. Can't believe quite how quickly I got through these! Good fun. ( )

A friend lent me the first Sookie book years ago, and though I enjoyed it I didn't feel the need to seek out the rest. When this boxset came up in the work bookclub for £7, I figured it was worth getting - I enjoy True Blood, and 70p a book is pretty good value for a nicely designed boxset. I started on the second book last week, and I've finished the box. Nine books in seven days. If that's not a ringing endorsement, what is?

They're what I think of as 'popcorn' books: lightweight but very moreish. The plotting is simpler than the series, since they're written from Sookie's point of view, and there are some awkward gaps between books filled by short stories not included in this collection, but it doesn't hurt the books. Sookie herself is engaging and believable, and her slow descent into darkness as the series progresses does not maker her any less entertaining. I look forward to the last few books (released since this set was put together), and only hope the covers match the rest! ( )
