"What takes place in the neonatal intensive care unit is the high drama of real life. The author pulls back the curtain to show the inner workings of this area in the hospital that is unfamiliar and frightening to most people. Hall, a longtime neonatologist and former social worker, writes with caring and compassion about the challenges each fragile baby must surmount in order to survive and thrive, all the while conveying a sense of life-and-death urgency that permeates neonatal intensive care. She expertly weaves the social and emotional threads of each family's journey into their baby's story, and also speaks candidly about the stresses and difficult decisions that neonatologists and their tiny patients' parents routinely face. Taken all together, the sixteen stories give an insightful, vivid and moving portrayal of life in the high-stakes world of the neonatal intensive care unit. This book is for anyone who has wondered how doctors and nurses work under intense pressure to diagnose and treat the smallest of patients, and how parents of these infants cope with the emotional ups and downs that are part the daily rhythms of life in the NICU."--… (más)

Dr. Hall shares her expertise and exposes the inner workings of the NICU where the frailest babies cling to life against overwhelming odds. Each vignette tackles provocative topics including poverty, literacy, immigration, limited health resources, disability, and drug abuse to show how each of these issues greatly affects the care of these babies receive and their hope for a healthy future.

Her compassion shines through the tears and the joy. This is an emotional and rewarding experience. ( )

I have always been fascinated by the medical field. I have been involved in one form or other all my life. This book was really full of information as to how these little ones are treated when they arrive too early. I completely enjoyed this book and hope to find others similar to it. I would definitely recommend this to anybody who has an interest in medical stories. Thanks for giving me the chance to read this one. ( )

The reader should be prepared to read about families' trials and sadness and joy in the NICU. This novel has its ups and downs, very realistic. The reader will be riveted to the novel, if he/she is medically inclined, especially in scenes where the baby may or may not make it. There is a "Notes" section to further broaden the readers' educations and show more depth to the diagnoses in the novel. The reader will not have to worry about a diagnosis or hurriedly look it up on Google. Any reader with children will appreciate this novel, the beauty of life should not be take for granted-a focal point for this novel. The reader will enjoy that an actual doctor wrote the novel, her experience shines through and makes every situation that much more believable. This book is recommended for readers who enjoy perusing medical literature.

Fascinating, heartwarming, terrifying. A wonderful roller coaster ride through a world I hope to never visit. Dr. Hall is a consumate storyteller and presents things with balanced perspective and caring. I read this book much faster than I expected to and do not regret any minute of it. I especially appreciate that she included notes with journal references and citations at the end of each chapter explaining some of the medical bits that were pertinent to each story promptly rather than dumping them all in a typically ignored appendix at the end of the book. They were much more useful interspersed amongst the rest. ( )
