I don't think I've ever been this angry with a book. I seriously contemplated tearing it in half. The heroine (as you can imagine from the title) was switched at birth by her supernatural family (trolls, but human-looking ones). Of course, she gets back. Her birth race has the most despicable society ever, where it is normal to place your baby in a rich human family and taking the child, so that when the child gets back, it has a substantial inheritance. The human child is raised by the trolls. If it is lucky, it gets some love (but even in the instance shown where that is the case, the human child remained second-hand to the troll-child), and it is forbidden to leave, even though it is at the bottom of society thereafter. The heroine's mother completely follows this trend, plus she knew that some human mothers sense that this is not their child and try to kill it. She even placed her daughter in a family with enlarged risk of this. On top of that, she shows no affection to her daughter whatsoever, only places expectation upon unachievable expectation upon her, then yells at her and rejects her if she doesn't meet the lofty goals within a few days of her arrival in this new society. This without ever telling her what she needs to know in order to achieve the goals. I HATE it when people hold back information in books, and then either expect you to follow them blindly, or expect you to act as if you already have that information. Then, when things go wrong, they blame YOU! It would have been more acceptable if the heroine had shown some spunk, but instead she does nothing. She would have had the perfect position to get some of what she wanted too, because mother dear wants her to perform. How easy would it have been to threaten to spoil things on purpose? Only at the very end does she finally make a decision to go contrary to mother's expectation, and before that she needed to be saved by her protector (the boy she's in love with). Yuk! ( )

Really enjoyed this YA book. I think mainly as for once I actually liked the main character, which has been a problem with some YA books (Twilight for example). Will read the remaining two books in this trilogy ( )

When Wendy Everly was six years old, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to kill her. Eleven years later, Wendy discovers her mother might have been right. She's not the person she's always believed herself to be, and her whole life begins to unravel--all because of Finn Holmes.

Finn is a mysterious guy who always seems to be watching her. Every encounter leaves her deeply shaken...though it has more to do with her fierce attraction to him than she'd ever admit. But it isn't long before he reveals the truth: Wendy is a changeling who was switched at birth--and he's come to take her home.

Now Wendy's about to journey to a magical world she never knew existed, one that's both beautiful and frightening. And where she must leave her old life behind to discover who she's meant to become...

A few things made that day stand out more than any other: it was my sixth birthday, and my mother was wielding a knife.
