There were three Newman brothers.

Francis William Newman was a classicist (Hiawatha: Rendered into Latin; a translation of the Iliad that Matthew Arnold panned) and President of the Vegetarian Society. “Unitarian” isn't quite right, but his religion is more what you'd expect of the academic middle classes of the time.

The least well-known middle brother, Charles Robert Newman, was an recluse and an atheist (Essays in Rationalism).
