A few weeks ago I saw a reference in a magazine or newspaper to a novel I had completely forgotten about. Then I promptly forgot the title again.
Undergraduates in the late 1980s/early 1990s in the UK (and probably in the US as well) were reading this big fat book, which I remember as a sort of long literary mystery novel (though that may be a muddle) with a one-word title. I thought it was called Quidnunc but it appears that the only book of that title which fits was published by a vanity press so it won’t be that.
There were many copies around, with a dark, maybe purple, cover, perhaps with an embossed symbol as part of the cover design. It was classily presented (no dragons or torn bodices or any imagery at all as I remember).
I have tried using Amazon’s recommendations for a book which is a bit like Name of the Rose and The Secret History but that has not found it. So maybe I have not got the genre right. But literary fiction it was, with a one-word title.
