It seems the discussion about a field specific for location of a book has been going on for many years, and that the way to go is still to use an existing field for that information. Others have suggested the "other call number" or the "comments" field. Is this still the most accepted route to go?
And then, if so, is there a way to rename that field - for example change the "other call number" to "location"? Or would that involve majorly hacking the system (which I am not planning to do and don't know how to do).
Thanks!

AFAIK there is no way to change a field's name.
"Other call number" is a perfectly fine location placeholder, one that many members here use as such. In fact, it's often an indirect location indicator anyway (similar call numbers are presumably shelved together). Using it as such kinda depends on how you use your library -- what fields you make visible in your catalogue, what you use tags for, what you use collections for, and whether or not you want location data duplicated in tags/collections.

Fair warning : I don't really use that feature. But, as far as I'm aware "other call numbers" already exists.
But, no, you can't change a field's name. LT is a huge international database, not some personal just for you thing.

For location, you might try collections and/or tags.

The only hacking you can do will be on the visual level with some kind of a plugin so any time you use a different browser/device, it will be back to the default. So not really worth it...
As >5 Nicole_VanK: mentioned, depending on how granular you want to be, a tag or a collection may be a better choice - a lot more visible, a lot easier to work with...

Call Number means a number used to locate a book, so it is practically synonymous with location

Yeah, "Other call number" is nothing different than "Shelving designator."

Thanks all for the answers. I am going for the "other call number" for location - it seems to make the most sense as some of you suggested. That way I can keep "collections" reserved for languages, and "tags" for topics. Thanks!
