This book was fiction.

It was about a girl growing up and helping her poor family survive, whilst there was a side plot of her working at a lake cabin and learning about the story of a poor young woman who drowned in the lake while accompanied by her rich lover who is suspected to have pushed her out into the water to drown.

I remember that there were specific scenes where she had to help a woman, who already had many other children, give birth and was horrified at what she was dealing with. There was another side plot where she was involved romantically with this young rich man who gifted her a book (she loved books) and she was disappointed to find that it was a cooking book. Theres another scene where she finds out her English teacher was a author who’s books or herself was banned, and she had to stop what she was doing and move away as to not get caught.

The girl was encouraged by the english teacher to write more and the teacher had told her that she had a talent and should go to the city or somewhere else to learn more.

I’m assuming that this book was written sometime in the 1900’s and the cover depicted a blue toned scenery with a lake, and the title of the book was placed in the middle. The book was quite thick, and was a bit worn out as well, so that is why I assume it to be old.

Thank you for reading this post and if you have any idea of what I’m talking about please let me know. I read this three years ago.

A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly?
Set during 1906, teenager Mattie works at a local hotel to help provide for her family, but dreams of escaping to college. Her story also intertwines with the true story of Grace Brown (whose death inspired Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy).
