The story ends with the guy killing himself but making it look like a murder. I just remember him saying that the string attached to his glasses (which he used to trigger his death) would be overlooked by everyone.

Not sure how old the book is, but my sister read it around 1997, so at least 20 years old.

This isn't And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, is it? I seem to recall the mastermind doing something like that. (The book was also published as Ten Little Indians.)
