I'm trying to track down a book I read when I was a kid. Some of the details are vague to me, but what I remember is: the main character in the book was a boy whose father works in the city. The father often brings home lunch from a fancy restaurant, or perhaps a hotel, and the boy decides that he wants to go on his own into the city and have lunch there. He makes it to the restaurant and orders food, but it turns out that the meal is far more expensive than he thought. The father sees the boy at the restaurant (the father may work there) and tells the waiter that he'll pay for the meal.

The only other details I think I remember are that the meal--either the one the father brings home, or the one the boy orders--was chicken, perhaps fried chicken; and I believe there was a monogrammed napkin.

I don't remember much else about the plot. The book was illustrated, I think, with line drawings reminiscent of what I think of as 1960's art. I believe the copy I had was a softcover and had a green cover. I read it for school when I was in 4th or 5th grade, which would have been in 1988 or 1989, but I think the book was probably written several decades earlier.

Not much to go on, I know, but you've helped me out before--much thanks!

It's a Scholastic book. Do a librarything search for Vintage Scholastic, look up the Series. It should be listed there. If you haven't found it I'll look up title and author later.

Amazing! Thanks so much, bookel. I really thought that this would be a tough one. Now that my friends all have little kids I've been trying to track down the books I enjoyed so much when I was little.

Again, much thanks.
