I remember reading this book in the mid-90s, it was a small, short picture book. I remember most of the story and recall the many of the illustrations but can't remember the author or title. In the book, a young girl jumps on the couch and knocks over her mother's horse statue/sculpture and breaks it (it may have been an elephant--can't quite remember). She is afraid to tell her mother so she hides behind the curtains, and then in a closet, and maybe a third place too because the closet was too dark. At some point she disguises herself as different animals (I specifically remember a raccoon mask, a bird mask, and maybe a monkey mask) to tell her mother that the daughter ran away but that she (as the animal she is dressed as) will be her new daughter, but the mother says she just wants her own daughter. In the end she tells her mom the truth and it all works out. I think the cover might have been pink and had the mother and daughter on it--I believe both had brown hair, and I think it was a hardcover. The little girl's name may have been Darcy, or something similar to that. Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

After receiving some additional information on other forums, I was able to find the book! It's called "I Love You More" by Juanita Havill. It's a First Little Golden Book.
