Okay, I've seen the LJ for the 50 book challenge, but skipped over it because the thought kinda scares me. That may be because I don't understand the concept behind it. What is the 50book challenge? Could someone explain? (Is it a specific set of 50 books, for instance?)
4Lunawhimsy
Goal is to read 50 books of your choosing in 2006, read, then post them on the board. you don't HAVE to read up to 50 or just 50, it's just a way to keep focused on reading

Oh, gee ... I suppose I should join this thing, having already read 51 books this year, and currently being in #52, #53, and #54!
Where exactly is this over on LJ?

50bookchallenge, funnily enough. (LJ search works really well.)
I'm a member of a different challenge, where the aim is to read one's own height (or more) in a year. I'm halfway up my thigh for the second time...

I should join it, considering I have read over 50 books this year.... of my choice.
8Lunawhimsy
Oooh by height, that is cool. I wonder how tall I've read so far this year? Is that group on LJ?
9quillmenow
I've been in 50 Book Challenge since March of this year. I'm up to 85 as of today.

One of the members of 50 book Challenge is the reason I came to LibraryThing. There was a link or mention on their post there and Voila!

I'm a 50booker! I'm pretty sure I came to the two separately...my sister told about LT and I think found about about 50bookchallege (and 15000pages) through another ljcomm.

Natantus - You can start whenever you want (start now and end 12-19-07, for instance) and count up to however many books you want. My challenge was for 100 books, which I beat (Woo! I'm on book 106). And I added a personal challenge of 30 books I'd never read before, since I reread so much, which I also beat (though that was harder).
I crosspost everything to my journal...it's really cool to have a record of what I've read, because I do forget. I just started reading a book, thinking it was a new read, and quickly realized it wasn't, but I'd forgotten. Also I didn't like it that much, so it was a waste of time :P

Being the new year and all, I should probably attempt this challenge as well. I have probably enough books on my "to-do" list to last me 3 50-in-a-year challenges. :D I've decided though that if I DO start, I should start AFTER the two books I'm currently reading, as I don't feel it would be fair to start with a head start, being halfway through with them already.

17 polomex -
Phht, whatever, my first book of this year was finished at 2am the morning of the first :)
I'm also probably going to attempt The Historian again, which I got about halfway through last year, and possibly one other book, Pure Drivel by Steve Martin, which I didn't like much but read half of...and it's quite short, so I may as well finish it.
Also, if anyone is interested in a less insanely huge version of the livejournal 50bookchallenge, there are a few similar-but-smaller communities out there. It's too big for me to, I had to take it off my friends list, so I joined 50_in_07 (which is quite small) and I've seen a couple others, such as book_it_2007.

I'm in the challenge this year. I noticed it when LJ featured the community on their main page. I'm in the middle of book #4, going a bit slowly since I'm working full-time and going to school part-time.

Me too.
I slowed down significantly after university started again (after reading 9 books in January), and now I'm reading my 14th book this year, Party of one : the loners' manifesto by Anneli Rufus.
I am in the 15,000 pages challenge as well and am proud to say that despite reading so few books, my pages are already up to 10,515.
For me it works best if I have a direct challenge partner, who is as competitive as I am and an avid reader. In this case, my mother. :)
(Even though I constantly lament the unfairness of her reading only German and me working my way through English and French books as well, but those are my choices, so I'll have to live with that.)

I definately knew I would read more than 50 this year. But I'm a member anyways.
So far I've read 92 books this year, and book 93 and 94 are Summer Harbor by Susan Wilson and a reread of Survivor in Death by J.D. Robb.

I am also a member of the community; I think I also heard about Library Thing in the community.
I am up to my sixteenth book and have read almost 6,000 pages (also a member of 15,000 pages).
Well I am off to do some reading and watching some TV and having some B&J ice cream.

Oy... failed miserably on my first attempt, I think I picked too intense of a book to start with... trying again...

I just joined it. I think I'll figure it starting January 2007. Now, if I can just remember all the books I've read since January.

I am! Just finished Frankenstein and am almost done with Lovecraft's Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath. Sadly, those only mark books 16 and 17 . . . I need to get on the ball with that challenge!

So far, I'm pacing myself. Have a lot on my real-world plate. Dang responsibilities. I'm averaging a book a week. Yay, go me!
30BTRIPP
I haven't officially "joined" but have read 35 books already in 2007, so I'm not particularly worried about making it to 50. I am a bit off the pace from last year, though ... I was at 40 books by the end of June 2006, and ended up with a total of 73 read for the year. All non-fiction, by the way, for whatever that's worth.

Hey LJ'ers,
I'm a member of the 50bookchallenge. The group is cool, however, since I'm deployed in Baghdad, Iraq, I have haven't had too much time to participate in the online group. Maybe I should post some more to that particular group.
Currently reading The Last Juror by Grisham. He has to be one of my favorite American authors because of his immense popularity and great stories. I love reading his books almost as much as I enjoy eating ice cream.
Take care people.

I am, sadly I've been in a bit of a reading slump lately. I've got 43 books read so far this year.

I've mentioned this in the book community thread above, but there's a newly formed book challenge community called 80in08. Being, obviously, a review and discussion group with an 80 book goal.
For some of us, who have more time, that's more like an actual challenge than '50' ;) I'm on 16 already, and it isn't even February yet.

Oooh ... that would be a challenge ... I read 79 non-fiction books last year, and 72 the year before ... I wonder if I could wedge in one more!
Of course, I could just blow through a bunch of fiction if I wanted to pad the numbers ...
