Mary will be properly educated (1), in the Convent of the Sacred Heart. Thomas can grow up at the Retreat (1), learning what he must do to eventually take it over. The author captures the social (1), then encouraged by Wyatt as he works to educate both the brilliant Randall and Thomas together (1), ignoring her mother's wishes (1), sisters or brothers -- with no regard for family or the torn community left behind. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading another of Mr.Tilghman's novels. Based on the excellent prose (1), I give it 4 1/2 stars. (1), and political ethos of the times so thoroughly that the reader is quickly immersed in this period of Maryland history. The friendship between the reticent Thomas and the black children Randall and Beal is particularly poignant. First ignored by the planta (1), Randall and Beal looms ever larger when Wyatt sends both boys off to college and Thomas falls in love. Mary (1), and to confront her brother over his behavior. Thus it is Mary who becomes the real protagonist as the plantation becomes hers to rule for many years.
