Living in New York City I have had to limit my library. When I married and we moved to my wife's smaller (but "chercer" apartment), I took probably a thousand books down to the Strand, which most Manhattanites think of as their library annex anyway.

Such imposed focus makes you think about what you really need but is definitely hard on what you really want. Most of what resides on my shelves is for reference, but I still reach for titles that have been gone for over twenty years -- like an amputee trying to flex a missing arm.

Luckily the Strand isn't too far away.
