This library is being established to support and advance a reading culture among teenage girls at the St. Lawrence Girls Secondary School in Chikwawa, Malawi. In partnership with St. Lawrence, this effort is being spearheaded by Bountiful Harvesters International (BHI), a consulting firm located in Georgia, in the United States of America. The classroom library will be situated in the school's classroom, where students will be able to check-out books, on a circular basis, in order to write book reports and critiques, and engage fellow students in active discourse concerning contemporary and historical issues and events. Our goal is to equip the library with at least 1,000 books. This initiative is a component of the Girls Education in Malawi Schools (GEMS) project, which is a four-year project, that aims to improve girls' learning outcomes and preparedness to transition to post-secondary school.
