Do you believe in Guardian Angels? Elizabeth has a story to tell.

Christmas in Wisconsin. It’s the most wonderful time of the year. But this year is different. Carla’s father passed away before Thanksgiving, and her husband Kevin, is missing in Afghanistan. Carla is grateful that her mother Elizabeth, and brother Jake, are coming for Christmas to help her distract her children; together they might have a few moments of joy. Carla and Jake are shocked at the story their mother begins to tell them all. It’s a story about their mother that they’ve never heard. As the story continues, Carla’s hesitation about her mother’s storytelling is quieted by their mother’s insistence that it is a story of hope. They all just need to listen.

I had the same initial reaction as the character of Carla as Elizabeth began to tell her story, especially in the presence of a 6-year-old grandson, and a 12-year-old granddaughter. There is darkness and light in this holiday story. Darkness that is rarely talked about, especially by a grandmother, giving an example from her personal experience.
