This is another one I inherited from my late uncle, he had a penchant for poetry, so now most of the books of poetry in my library are from his collection. I liked a few of the poems and one really struck home for me.
For the most part, I enjoyed parts of some of the poems more than the poem as a whole such as:
if you were
hunted, but walked into
open meadows to feel
the blue of the sky
at the price of your life
then you know my name
i am the rabbit [from The Rabbit pg.9]
I appreciate the notion of risking one’s life just for a glimpse of open air and an unobstructed view of the sky. Must be the romanticist in me.
I also liked the last stanza in the poem To Believe in God [pgs.39-48]:
to believe in you
is more than I need
to make believing
more than making believe.
Note, I am an atheist so, I don’t feel that the last stanza is speaking to/of God, though it probably is.
Among the poems I liked in their entirety were: Forty Million Mornings [pgs,23-24], its bittersweet ending on a sad and bitterly ironic note; The Red Cat [pg.25], poor kitty, I love ‘em but I’m so allergic to their dander; Blue Water Running [pgs.26-27], nice idea and its pretty; and Parable [pg.55], words of wisdom. Finally, my favorite from the whole book is Lizzie and Blondie [pgs.83-85]. This one got me right in the feels and in my opinion is a truly great poem.
Overall, I liked this book, and it was a quick easy read. I would recommend it if you dig poetry.

What caught me and led me into reading this book of poetry (as a person not fond of poetry) was the title of the first section and first poem...King of Nervous Things. 'a rabbit is born/king of nervous things' or the third poem:
If you make love with one eye/
on every leaf that moves/
then you know my name/
I am the rabbit.

that is the first section.
