Conceived by Mervyn Kurlansky on a brief visit to New York in 1972, he was so impressed by the outbreak of graffiti on subway cars, buses, trucks, streets and buildings. So, he decided to re-explore the city with Jon Naar and record this phenomenon.

And this magnificent book, the first major publication on the subject of subway graffiti, is the result of his combined effort: photographic graffiti plates on the subway by Mervyn Kurlansky and Jon Naar, as well as an essay by Norman Mailer.

Collects photos that originally appeared in the book, The Faith of Graffiti, and all of the photos that were taken during the same two week period of the winter of '73 that were not published in that first classic the book.
I didn't know that a lot of the graffiti crews were made up of young kids 9,10, 12 year-olds.
Even though I find stencils, stickers, and logos a little more interesting, this book is an important historical document.
