This was a great book! My husband and I are doing an LS swap in a 1984 Trans AM and this book will help get the most out of the new motor. The pictures are helpful and the directions are clear.

This book is a must-have if you are building a Chevy Small Block. It covers all aspects from beginning to end. It contains many helpful color photos showing detail.
It also contains many charts with helpful info throughout the book.
At the end, it has a build of a sample engine:422 CI. It has all the parts used and item #s included in a chart at the end of the book.
You will be happy with this book to help in your engine building.
I received this book from Car Tech in exchange for my honest review. Thank You

Holey smoke. I knew the small block Chevy was still popular, but I didn't realize how much. Mavrigian does a fine job explaining what's out there and what you need to know to put together the right parts and assemble them correctly. At the end of the book he goes through putting together a 422 small block and the various things you might not realize are important, but will make the difference between an engine with a short life or a long one. If you're building a small block using an original Chevy block, this isn't the book for you. He sticks to the high quality aftermarket blocks. Given all the potential problems of a used block, that isn't a bad idea, but make your own choice.
Would have been nice if they had done a street engine build as well.

Another great Car Talk book. Easy to follow, clear, step-by-step instructions, starting with a table of contents that makes it easy to find exactly what you're looking for. Lots of color photos, diagrams, and charts. Source guide. Printed on heavy, gloss paper - a book you'll keep and use again. Highly recommended.

Anyone who has been involved in hot-rodding in the past 30 years has seen many how to build hot rod engine books but in the last 5 years or so, the technology has changed extensively. This new book delves into this technology in a way that anyone can understand it. From Piston and Block, design to the development of what would have been bizarre camshaft, head and intake design back in the 70’s when one of the first books of this sort was published.
“CarTech” books has put together a book filled with photos and information along with showing how to build a 700+ hp, 422 cid, naturally aspirated small block Chevy. Starting with choosing the Block, to which intake and carb best suits your build. As with all the CarTech books there is a source guide in the back that gives the names of the parts suppliers from Brodix Blocks to Wiseco Pistons.
This book is KILLER thru and thru and should be in any hot-rodder’s collection.

This is a very interesting and well written book. It starts with a little history of the small block Chevrolet generation one engine, then proceeds to explain what could be done with it. It covers the main components involved in building a very powerful engine with this design. Includes aftermarket items such as blocks, camshafts, crankshafts connecting rods, pistons and other parts. I have owned and driven all the engine sizes from 265 to 350 cubic inches, and believe them to be of excellent design. I still have two gen one engines. I also drive an LS powered car.

This is an excellent guide for anyone planning a rebuild 265-283-327-350 Chevrolet small block. The technical data is presented in a logical sequence; the explanations are clearly stated. The criteria for choosing components such as camshafts, pistons, and lifters are set forth in an easy to understand fashion. The book closes with a sample engine rebuild with a table including all the parts, and their numbers, used in the rebuild. There is also an index of parts suppliers. The chapter discussing performance cylinder heads is a particular treasure. Like all books of this sort several things to remember; no price information is presented, no time involved in the project is offered, and the amount of equipment needed to complete the example rebuild is probably far more than the average home mechanic owns. Never-the-less this is an excellent manual and well worth the cost.

Appearance: High-quality glossy paper and perfect quality of full-color printing along with colorful pictures.

Content: I won this book in LibraryThing review program, and I’m writing this review as an automobile enthusiast who grew up with different cars and always takes care of his car, not as a mechanic or an engineer.

In LS Gen IV Engines 2005, the author began with an introduction of this generation of LS engine and also a comparison and the differences with older versions.

This book contains high-quality pictures that show each part of the engine from a different angle, also with a clear explanation of each part, and how to dispatch or install each part. http://3ee.info/ls-gen-iv-engines-2005-present-how-to-build-max-performance/

This is a well-written manual for the rebuild of the classic Holley carburetor - something I haven't done but I have worked on similar 4-barrel carbs as well as the side-draft barb (and you're wondering, what the heck is that?). CarTech has done an amazing job coming up with a winning formula in their Workbench series - and this volume is a welcome addition. If you're a car buff like be you've probably either had a car with this configuration or highly desire one, well this is the right manual to walk you through the ins-and-outs of a rebuild.

The book has a perfect binding (glued) so I'm not sure how durable it will be on the workbench, however the price is right - about $20 on Amazon which is less than the $27 retail. If you're thinking about rebuilding your Holley or, rebuilding for the first time, I think you'll find some useful insight into how the carb works, how it's constructed and more importantly, the steps to clean, refurb and rebuild. Don't do what I did on my first and end up with a linkage out of place (had to take the whole thing apart and apply part of another kit). Read something like this first to avoid my mistakes.

As full disclosure, I received this book as part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program.

A nice effort to cover what might be considered to be a pretty narrow area, i.e. a subset of GM engines from 2005 to now, however, that subset still covers a large number of engine configurations including both iron and aluminum blocks of displacements from 4.8 to 7.0 liters. As a result, the book can seem a bit too diverse. The author does, however, do an admirable job segregating content with the use of tabular graphics and dedicated paragraphs to speak to the unique configurations. With ~80 pages dedicated to the stock engine details and another ~45 dedicated to the builds of 2 high performance instances and given the range of engines discussed, the material is not extremely detailed, however, the intended audience will likely be relatively familiar with the GM V8 and not need the fundamentals repeated.
Overall, a nice work for the GM V8 aficionado or the owner of an equipped vehicle who wants to better understand what's going on under the hood.

LS Gen IV Engines 2005 - Present: How to build max performance by Mike Mavrigian is a book that every hotrodder should have in their arsenal. Why? Because the GM LS Gen IV engine is the most popular powerplant for engine swap projects. I see so many GM LS Gen IV engines in Fords, Chryslers, and other cars because of the ease of producing high-performance out of this powerplant.

Mike Mavrigian book unlocks the complexity of the GM LS Gen IV engine. He makes it so easy to understand that even my 19-year-old granddaughter could make her car go faster.

I really enjoyed learning how to make more horsepower with this engine by getting more air and fuel into the engine. Also, the book covered which aftermarket heads to purchase and if I chose to stay with the stock heads how to port them for maximum performance.

This is definitely a book you need in your library.

This book is somewhat confusing. The author jumps back and forth between the different LS engines making is hard to follow. It contains a lot of good, quality pictures which helps to follow the text, but overall hard to follow.

This book was received for free from the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I expressed are my own.

The LS series of engines have become prime candidates for modification to increase both power and durability. The GEN IV series are ubiquitous and deserve a "how to" book of its own. Mike Mavrigan has step to the plate and provided an outstanding guide dedicated to building increased performance for this popular engine series. Like any competently constructed manual the book is divided into sections dedicated to the varies subassemblies of the engine. The technical data, parts sourcing, and assembly information are presented in a straight forward manner along with photos and charts to illustrate points presented in the text. This is not a manual for the faint of heart or someone terrified of math; the info presented is for the dedicated gearhead and engine builder. The book concludes by presenting the build of two different engines. An appendix with parts sourcing information is also included. One caveat; the builds demonstrated cannot be accomplished with a set of hand tools in a one stall garage. The tools required will put a huge dent in the average hotrodder's wallet. The book is therefore best described as a resource for those needing information about what is available to modify the GEN IV engine as well as a general guide for the professional engine builder.
