At first I thought this book was just your sweet, albeit average story about putting friends before yourself.....but the last illustration just makes me laugh. An elephant in a knitted onezie! It was the most adorable picture ever.

Tad Hills illustrates the Rocket Learns to Read books and now having a mouse and an elephant through his eyes was such fun. And a sweet story of friendship and love what else do you want at Christmastime

This book is for primary aged students. This is another story in the Rocket series and already and writing, where this story tells about how Rocket is collecting new words in order to write a story of his own! This book goes into the pieces of language is a great pairing for a beginning writing or storytelling lesson (3rd grade-ish?).

This book is for primary level students. This picture book depicts a dog named Rocket and his friend, the little yellow bird, and Rocket's journey to read and enjoy stories found in books. Though he may have been reluctant to learn at first, his love for stories told by the little bird encouraged him to learn to read them for himself.
This book would be incredibly helpful for parents to read to children who may be reluctant or struggling to learn to read. It gives them encouragement to try, as they will want to have the same excitement for stories as Rocket does.

Intermediate
Rocket is a dog who doesn't know how to read. A yellow bird teaches him how to read.
I personally don't lobe this book; I find it boring. But, I could read it aloud to primary students as they're learning to read and use it as encouragement, like "if a dog can do it so can you." I probably wouldn't use it beyond that.

This book is intended for early readers. This book would be good for first and second grade.

This book talks about a dog, who keeps finding things outside. He picks them up and someone says "Drop it, Rocket", and he drops it. He is a good boy.

This book is good for students who are learning new vocabulary and learning to read. This book is very repetitive so it allows the students to find familiar words and repeat them. This repartition will help the students remember these works for the future. The end of the book has a page of vocabulary that students can read. I would use this book if we were learning to read, or learning vocabulary that was used in the book.

Super sweet book to show patience and friendship, that learning something new isn't always a bad thing. I think this book shows opportunity for growth in relationships and in knowledge

A simple book with a full story. I expected just colors with one word and examples by pictures. But this uses full sentences with known characters.

Duck prepares a gift for Goose and is flustered when Goose thinks the packaging is the present.

This is a sweet book about friendship and gratitude. Goose's exuberance is infectious, while Duck's gentle attempts to interject are relatable. Tad Hills manages to express a lot of emotions in the relatively simple illustrations.

Unfortunately, even with talking animals as the main (and only) characters, they are still both male so this book has zero diversity.½

The author of the Duck & Goose series has another installment about Rocket the dog. In the series “Have fun and learn with Rocket” it is about a beautiful day for Rocket and his squirrel friend Bella. They play together until it starts to rain. Bella proclaims she doesn’t like rain but she does like puddles.
Rocket has several picture books and early readers. This reader did not indicate a level of reading and there are more than just site words in this installment in the series. The font is large, sentences short which does make it a perfect fit for a beginning reader. Repetitive word use helps also. Colorful illustrations accompany the story with a lot of white space until the gray clouds roll in with rain. A good reader for the fans of Rocket.

Rocket is delighted when a butterfly lands on his nose! But when the butterfly flies off into the woods, is Rocket brave enough to follow?

This is a short and sweet story with a slight moral about facing your fears (not heavy handed at all). It is perfect for beginning readers to read to themselves or with some help from an adult, depending on their skill on level. Younger preschool children with shorter attention spans might also enjoy hearing this as a read-aloud.

The gentle, sparse illustrations fit the text well.½

What’s not to like about this charming book ... an adorable dog, a bird who teaches reading, and the wonder of letters turning into words, and words turning into stories.

Duck & Goose, Goose & Duck. Feathered friends forever . . . or are they? You see, there's a challenge to their friendship: a little whippersnapper of a duck named Thistle. Thistle is good at everything (or so she thinks), from math to holding her breath to standing on her head. Duck thinks she's fantastic. But Goose does not! And so Goose is faced with a problem close to the hearts of children everywhere: What happens when your best friend makes a new friend?

In this latest book about Duck and Goose, Duck wants to give Goose a present. Duck finds a box that is perfect for the gift. It is almost too perfect. Goose does not believe that there is more to the gift than just the box. Goose is happy with just the box. Duck goes through the story trying to convince Goose that there is a special surprise inside. I would recommend this for any collection owning the Duck & Goose series. Young readers will enjoy this book with big and bold words and colorful illustrations. It would also make a great read aloud as well. This is a great start for young readers not quite ready for chapter books.

Very short very and simple book , but very meaningful. Usually when in our lives when we look for interesting things or people , we look too far and we forget the amazing things and people around us. However Rocket at the end figured out the special things in life. This will be a great read for social studies class to teach students about the true value of things.

ROCKET WRITES A STORY is an adorable tale of a dog who loves books so much he wants to write a story of his own. The book teaches about brainstorming words and ideas, writers block and finding inspiration for writing. It would make an excellent book to read to a class and have them write about what inspires them using some of the techniques that Rocket used in the book.

This is a great book. It talks about how the duck and goose feel. It's a great book to read to the children in regards to emotions. The children will ask, why duck or goose are said. And we all as a group figure why one or the other is sad. I normally wouldn't do a themed lesson plan on this because it is basically working Emotion Development for the children.

I liked the little bird character in this story, he is a very direct character and has the dialog and demeanor as a teacher. I liked that he made Rocket interested in what he was doing by leaving cliff hangers in a story. I think this resonates well with many children. You have to make things interesting in order for them to want to learn new things. I think the theme would be learning about himself.
