How to Make Friends with a Ghost in a beautifully illustrated little children's book. It's a fun combination of helping your child learn to care for a pet and helping your child ease into the concept of death! Overall very charming.

A story of a polar bear born in Norway, and given to Henry III, King of England, when it was full grown. The illustrations are stunning, and the story is touching. Records indicate that a bear (perhaps a polar bear which was indigenous to Norway,) was indeed given to Henry III for the menagerie at the Tower of London. A cage containing the bear who was muzzled and chained on board the deck of the ship. Tempest tossed, no doubt sick, the bear had a tumultous journey from Norway to England.

After arrival, a huge chain was used to tether the bear to the Thames river so it could fish. Interestingly, the records also show a purchase of a thick wrap for the bear's keeper to go into the water with the bear. Normally polar bears eat seals, and not fish. But, there were no seals in the Thames river. Huge polar bears would not survive on fish as an inordinate amount would need to be consumed to sustain the bear.

The author does a wonderful job of painting a calm, beautiful life then disturbed by those who traveled on a sailing ship to capture the bear and taken via the ship back to England.

I very much enjoyed the suppliment at the end of the book that gives a brief history of the tower menagerie and the records that still exist of showing the menagerie contained camels, lions, leopards originally on the property of Henry's great-grandfather who then transported them to the Tower of London in 1252.

History also shows the menagerie was closed in the 19th century and placed in new homes (not named in the book.) Today, if you visit the tower, you can see a sculputure of King Henry III's bear at the place he/she spent their life.

Four and 1/2 Stars½

A whimsical title with charming illustrations, this book works as a Halloween title for young readers who prefer the cuter side of spooky.

I have mixed feelings about this particular title. The book itself isn't new - it has been around since 2017, and was clearly popular enough to warrant a paperback run now in 2022. The illustrations are perfect - they're very well-done and true to the style. I think the premise of this book is just not for me - I'm not super into spooky things, I'm not super into ghosts, and I'm a little bit worried that children are so literal that they might not really "get" this book. On the other hand, it takes all kinds to make a world, and I know lots of children who come to my library who would love a book like this, who love ghosts and spooky things, and who wouldn't be scared at all to think about having a ghost for a friend. So overall, it's a very cute book, it's very well-done, and I'd recommend it for most general collections. Whether or not it's right for you and the kids in your life depends on how cute they think ghosties can be!

A sweet instruction book providing advice on how to make friends with a ghost - and keeping that lifelong friend. Nothing scary, but enough gross stuff to warrant squeals of delighted disgust.

A whimsical guide for children on how to not only find and identify a ghost, but how to make friends with one. It offers the sage advice that if you are "sweet, and warm, and kind" the ghost will likely find you, which is good advice for making friends of any kind. The silly but delightful tips and advice on maintaining your such an unique friendship will appeal to children, and likely bring some giggles, and the illustrations seem to fit perfectly. A wonderful little book with a lovely message, not often seen in picture books, about the joys of having a lifelong friend who will be by your side throughout the changes life brings.

This is an absolutely charming children's picture book that pacts in so many topics. While teaching children how to make friends with a ghost, this book reminds children how there are many things out there that might be perceived as a ghost (ie. dust on a camera lens), how to make friends, and also about aging. This is a great read for year round but especially at Halloween for children who do not like anything scary at all.

The jokes were mostly above my 3 year old, but she enjoyed the charming art and some the silly sight gags. A fun book for older kids and perfect for the Halloween season.

This is an informative book on how to meet and have a friendship with a ghost. The book had me smiling throughout with the themes staying ghostly, and the fact that a ghost is more than a lifelong friend if you are lucky enough to meet one.
The illustrations are detailed and very fitting. This is not written as an ordinary story but as an instruction booklet.
I have not enjoyed reading about a ghost this much since Gus the Ghost.

This is a whimsical how-to manual on ghosts and what to do when you are befriended by one. After an introduction, it is divided into three section- Ghost Basics; Ghost Care; Growing Together. Ghost care is really the funniest. The illustrations are just perfect for the how-to format of the book.½

I received this book as part of the early reviewer program, and I think it might be my 3yr old’s new favorite Halloween book, if not one of her top favorites. She really loves how cute the ghost looks and it is a very fun to read. I personally love the ending when there is a “new” ghost. Hits in the feels. There are plenty of fun details in the pictures as well. A+, I think most kids will enjoy reading How to Make Friends with a Ghost!

How to Make Friends with a Ghost is quite literally a how-to guide divided into three parts!  My eight-year-old daughter and I both loved this story of friendship with fun illustrations that entertained us with ghost basics, ghost care (includes a recipe for floating spaghetti and mudballs!), and growing together.  Silly, whimsical, and just a touch spooky (in a lighthearted and fun way); How to Make Friends with a Ghost is a wonderfully illustrated children's book that is recommended by both mom and daughter!

How to Make Friends with a Ghost by Rebecca Green is by far one of the most surprisingly sweet and most original children's books I have read in a long time. Honestly, I really was not sure what to expect upon receiving this advanced copy, but you can bet I loved every single page and every illustration in all it's detail.
Rebecca Green has put together an enjoyable book for all ages with silly recipes, tips and helpful info on caring for your own ghost. How to Make Friends With a Ghost is quirky, cute, and every bit fun! I know of at least two or three people who will be receiving this treasure once it is published!
...And who knows, maybe I'll be lucky enough to have a ghost of my own one day that I can care for, make mud tarts for and grow old with! One thing is for sure, I'll be well prepared!

I received this book at no cost, courtesy of NetGalley, for my honest feedback and review.

I did not really get this book. My initial response was what is going on here. As I read through it, I could see where it could be useful to teach about how to manuals with a bit of fun. The illustrations were cute and added to the book. The idea of growing old with your ghost was nice and could be transferred to family and friends. Overall this book was just okay for me. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

I'm a HUGE fan of the illustrations. The art is so quaint and adorable, it fit really well with the adorable story. I want a ghost friend of my own! It's so sweet how the roles flip as the little girl gets older, but that they stay friends all the to the end. And I mean to the literal end. And beyond. Absolutely a lovely read!

This book was very cute, although it’s the illustrations that really draw me in. I’ve been following Green’s art for years, and I’m thrilled that she’s been doing books recently.

I read this book to my sons ages five and one, and both enjoyed it, although the oldest loved it. Being enthralled with ghosts but also slightly nervous about the idea of them, he found it reassuring and funny to read about a friendly one. The silly phrases and words (I believe the word “booger” came up at one point) really caught his attention, as boys seem to be all about the gross and goofy.

This is more than a Halloween book, despite how it may have been marketed. We read this on a regular basis, and it’s really a book about friendship and kindness. Some parts were a little over my son’s head, but it’s definitely a sweet read for any age.

Tundra produces the most beautiful and charming children's books and this is no exception. Rebecca Green's simple concept is explored with inventiveness and good humor. I expect young children will enjoy the humorous tips and suggestions for having fun with a ghost friend. When my niblings get a bit older I'll have to share this with them.

How to Make Friends with a Ghost: A depressingly realistic look at platonic soul love
REVIEW COPY

Q: Who will meet you when you die? A: Forget about family. If you are lucky enough to have a Ghost friend, he or she will. For the first time you will share a non-corporeal form with you and able to hold hands. You can skip jump, high-five, and more.

This book a thinly veiled view on the short time we have and the permanence of true friendship...

I loved this book. LOVED.
Contrary to mass review and much marketing, this is not a Halloween story. Anyone review you read which makes the comparison or mentions this as a spooky story didn’t get it.

Being that this illustrated book was released in September, I felt that the goal of the publisher was to make a few bones in the thematic fall marketplace. I could not in good faith review this book before November. This is an all year round book.

HMFG is about as scary as the movie Beetlejuice. Much as the characters of Beetlejuice relied on the ‘Handbook for the Recently Deceased’, this book can help you make a ghost your pally.

While the text and handbook presentation is a bit tongue in cheek, the illustrations tell an entirely different story. The pictures describe a warm friendship between a girl and a spirit. This friendship lasts an entire lifetime and beyond. I do not have a spirit friend, and after reading this, I felt a little lonely. No, seriously. I was not one for imaginary or spirit friends growing up and I am a little unhappy with the universe right now.

Presented as a DIY/HowTo guide, Rebecca Green has laid out a series of steps on how to identify, befriend, care for, and grow into adulthood with the undead.

More questions:
Q: What are good foods to cook with your friend? A: Floating Spaghetti and Mudballs

Q: Where should your ghost sleep? A: In a dark corner of the attic, preferably with a chill and some ambiance spiderwebs.

Q: Can you read this book to children? A: Yes, absolutely. It is cute, whimsical, and approaches the concept of physical impermanence with a wink and a nod. The last page made me cry. Not like boredom from stereo instructions tears, actual ‘my heart broke a little’ tears.

Q: But what about God and Heaven and ________ insert another topic here ________? A: Seriously? It’s a cute book which has some dark undertones. Read it, love it, have some hard conversations. You owe it to your kid(s).

Q: I don’t have kids and I have no desire for those urine filled mewling cabbages to be around me. Can I still read this? A: Yes.

——

Q: Should you disclose this was a free book sent to you by the publisher or author in exchange for an honest review, even if said review was incredibly negative, but ultimately hoping that you would enjoy it and provide a favorable viewpoint? A: Yes. The disclosure is provided in the question above. Consider my opinion positive.

Ghosts need friends just like we do. It might be a bit scary at first to be friends with a ghost, but this helpful guide will show you how. The tricky part is finding a ghost. Rather than looking for one, it's better to let the ghost find you. Once you are acquainted with your ghost let the fun begin. Ghosts have special needs, and this how-to book will help you care for your new friend. You can make snacks for it, take walks together, and tell it funny jokes. If you move or when you grow older, your ghost will still be there for you. Your ghost is your true friend to the end...forever.

The Bottom Line: Rebecca Green's debut picture book is a delightful winner. This quirky and sweet tale of everlasting friendship is great for kids who are a little bit shy. This ghostly tale is not scary at all. Green used a soothing, limited color palette resulting in charming illustrations with a gothic, retro feel. Highly recommended for kids in grades K – 2. This is the perfect seasonal reading for kids interested in fantasy and make-believe.

A beautifully illustrated and delightful guide to fostering a friendship with a ghost, should one find you and decide to befriend you. I absolutely loved the illustrations, and the different sections of the book (especially the recipe) were absolutely precious. Appealed to me as a lover of beautiful illustrations and a goth, and my eight-year-old goth-in-training loved it, too. Unexpectedly touching ending.

The Cutest

(Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book for review through Library Thing's Early Reviewers program. This review contains spoilers!)

Written in the form of a how-to guide, Rebecca Green's How to Make Friends with a Ghost is, in a word, adorable. Like, it just doesn't get any cuter than this. (Seriously, just check out this photo on the author's website. ADORBS!)

For the Casper-curious, Green advises readers on how to attract a spectral friend, keep him entertained and content, and protect him from harm. As it turns out, ghosts aren't all that different from us: they enjoy nature, dancing, reading, socializing, and personal hygiene. But they do have some special needs; ghosts, for example, look a lot like various white fluffy foodstuffs, so it's easy to nom on them without even knowing. And even though they resemble tissue, boogers are not a ghost's best friend.

>

Ghost friends can be a little bit of a handful, it's true; but they do put the "forever" in best friends forever. File this one under the best and most unexpectedly heartfelt ending in a kid's book, ever.
