I really loved this. Similar to X-Men, this story features an Earth where people with special powers exist, and are greatly discriminated against. The main character Freya has the power of prophetic dreams, which she has hidden from the world, including her own father. Unlike X-Men, this is not an action/adventure, but a young woman's journey to embrace her identity. By connecting with others that are also "paradextrous" she comes to realize the power of connection with friends and ultimately her own family. Her Filipino/Norwegian background also made for really interesting cultural references.

fiction - fantasy/paranormal themes (Filipino/Finnish Canadian with prophetic dreams trying to stay safe in a prejudiced and fearful society that can be dangerous for paradextrous people like her; set in 1990s-2015 Kelowna BC/Toronto ONT)

this story unfolds slowly and reads at a slower pace, maybe dragging just a little in the middle, but I enjoyed spending time with Freya and her thoughts. Her fears of being discovered/being outed (intentionally or not) parallel those of some people in the LGBTQAIP+ community, and to some extent, the prejudice/fear against the paradextrous is similar to the irrational fear that some have against gays and/or ethnic/religious minorities.

This was a beautiful book with a beautiful cover! I liked the filipino mythology, and how the main character was so stuck inside herself. There's a lot to relate to here if you're shy or feel weird or different, or are treated as weird or different by society.
