It was really hard to find a Black lead easy reader before 2000. But Nikki Grimes has been writing forever and I was pleased to find this book for those beginning readers. The story was about a girl who gets her hair braided weekly and she doesn't want to do it. The story is great and I think it needs to be given new life with new illustrations. These current illustrations feel as dated as they are (1996) and ages a story that is timeless.

This is great multicultural fiction book about a little girl who does not like getting her wild hair brushed and done on Mondays. She loves it once her mother is finally done and has it braided. This could be a cute book for teaching about outcomes and how sometimes the things we really enjoy, take a little challenge to get through. Funny book.

(10 stars for George Ford's illustrations!)

In rhymed verse, Grimes tells the story about how a little girl thinks of every Monday morning. She hates getting her hair brushed out because it hurts her, but she loves how pretty the braids look when her mom is finished with it.

I love the way Grimes gives voices and faces to realities that are not commonly seen in children's literature, but she does it appropriately naturally. Grimes doesn't try to teach white people about black hair. She doesn't use dialogue that allows for the fetishization of black hair. Grimes simply tells the story about what one little black girl felt about getting her hair brushed out on Mondays, but Grimes doesn't insinuate that all little girls of color have similar Mondays nor similar feelings.

Tisa does not want her hair done. She likes her wild hair and does not want it combed or braided. Tisa’s mother finally tells her it is time to get her hair done.
The Wild, Wild, Hair is a good multicultural book. It tells about a young girl getting her hair done. A lot of children do not like to get their hair combed are braided. The conflict is between Tisa and her mother who wants to tame her hair. It takes place at her house. The tone is humorous and funny.
I would have the children tell a story about their hair. I would have them look up different hairdos and see what they think of them.

I read this book for a Victorian Literature class, and I enjoyed it and had some insights, but I didn't fully understand it until several years later when I worked in a county law library in the courthouse. There I saw how the Law can make people crazy. Definitely ought to be required reading for anyone going to law school or otherwise involved with civil law.

I liked Dickens story. It was complex and interesting. He has a lot of interesting characters and he puts some lessons in life in the story. It is a dark story with a semi-nice ending.½

Bright Eyes, Brown skin is a poetry book that talks about all the beautiful aspects like hair, nose, lips, etc that a African American child has. I think this book would be perfect for pre-school through first grade. The activity I would do with this book is have children pair up with each other and draw a picture of their good friend and explain to the class what is it about their friend makes them a good friend?

Having read a lot of Dickens, I want to recommend this particular edition highly. The footnotes include references not only to the sometimes obscure vocabulary, but also popular songs of the time, the Book of Common Prayer and Shakespeare. Readers in Dickens time would have picked up on the phrases but we readers in the 21st century appreciate the little extra help.

The first time I read Bleak House I was unimpressed; I didn't understand what justified the lengthiness. Later, I had a journey through the legal system and then I understood perfectly the absurdity, the leeches that bleed the system, the pointlessness of the sacrifice it demands. Great BBC production if you prefer film.½

This book multiculture book was a rhyming book with beautiful illustrations. This was a simple picture book about the African-American culture, their skin color, eye color, hair, etc. The illustrator, George Ford used his and Bernette's daughter Olivia in the artwork bringing a personal nature to the story.

I really enjoyed reading this story. This was a simple way to show some of the unique specialties of a culture.

This would be a great way to open a discussion of the diversity of cultures. It would be great to have a day to dress in different cultures an deat different cultural foods.

This may be one of Dickens' longer novels, and any reader will admit that it takes a while to get into, but I have to say it's my favorite from what I've seen. The story feels more complex and careful than what I've read from him, and the structure is interesting. It may be slow, but if you can get going, this is worthwhile and touching. As far as the criticism, it's what you'd expect from a norton critical edition--some seems fairly obvious and some is an interesting look at the novel. There's a good spectrum here, subject-matter wise.
