The two most boring characters I can remember coming into contact with. Both are torn apart by anxiety largely because of work stress. He is a professional athlete (which, okay, is stressful) and she is (not making this up) a person who makes miniature doll versions of famous women, places them in what sounds like dioramas, and sells them on Etsy. MMC falls for her because he likes sitting with her on the couch and watching Law & Order together. And this life, doll making and return watching, is too stressful for Zara to endure while also having any social life at all. How is this something anyone wants to read about? This is the opposite of fun. DNF at 66%. I would have stopped earlier but it was the only thing I had downloaded and I was on the subway so wifi was too limited to do anything about that.

This was fine, just fine. AF has interesting ideas but only delivers the shallowest take on them. Feels like eating cotton candy- nothing filling about it.

Bad fashion sense? That is the wearer’s fault. Unattractive features? Blame genetics, not the person.

Belaboring points drags any plot down. To repeatedly focus on physical features over which one has no control is cruel. If it’s crucial to the plot, mention it once and move on- readers have brains and can remember and process information. His speech at 77% in is nice but we’ve been bludgeoned with too much abuse by then.

Any reader who has similar features that are being mocked will be turned off by the repetitive cruelty of diluting one’s worth to something that they did not create. I know I cringe whenever a female character is mocked for having a mustache.

Still too much focus on the negative to really earn many body positivity points but A LOT better than the prior book. The MCs were okay.

Loved the MCs. Would have enjoyed a deeper dive into the plot but it was a good story, start to end.

Didn’t really enjoy this. Thought Tess was on the spectrum but no, just weird….in a way that quickly became quite monotonous. Cole was just an entitled ass.
And I absolutely HATE the pregnancy trope. Are all these authors are all thrilled Roe v Wade went away? That was something I respected about “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”- they did NOT shy away from the hard decision.

High 2- kitchen sink novel. Too much time spent on parental convos- needed more of the MCs. Disability used as something of a token issue- didn’t involve helpful solutions. Okay romance. Too many elements in the story (both characters snd situations) gives this an unfinished and rushed feel.

Walk of Shame
Downside of Dating, Book 2

I Picked Up This Book Because: Sounded good at the time.

Media Type: Audiobook
Source: Netgalley
Dates Read: 2/23/24 - 2/25/24
Stars: 4 Stars
Narrator(s): Robert Hatchet, Savannah Peachwood

The Characters:

Astrid O’Malley
Cal Matson
Tig (Astrid’s Ex), Astrid’s Dad, Nola and Thea (Astrid’s BFFs), Cal’s sisters

The Story:

I had forgotten how much I enjoy this author’s writing. I was a bit jarred going from my slow burn last read into this one-night stand, but I recovered quickly. I love the back and forth between Astrid and Cal. Even when they were just texting their chemistry was off the charts.
I need the next book in this series STAT cause I need many explanations about this epilogue.

Walk of Shame by Avery Flynn
Downside of Dating series #2. Contemporary sports romance, romantic comedy. Can be read as a stand-alone.
Astrid O’Malley was once dumped by a professional hockey goalie so has sworn off the game and won’t let the topic be discussed when she’s bartending at the family bar. Eff hockey. Eff goalies is her motto. After a hot and steamy night with a man she met at the bar, she finds out he is a goalie coach and her dad wants her to come back for his last year as coach to help. Her rule is one night only. But this gorgeous and sexy man lives in her building! And Astrid is going to be working with him! How is she going to stay away from him when their night was so very good? Puck my life.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook narrated by Robert Hatchet and Savannah Peachwood. The performances were on point with humor and passion. The narrators were engaging and easy to follow. The dialog itself was often funny and they put their own spin on the recording that made the story fly. I listens to this at 1.5 which is my most comfortable based on conversational speed.

Amusing, engaging, and steamy hot. I loved the Diet Coke theme that ran consistently through the story, although I admit to preferring Diet Pepsi myself. I often pack it in suitcases when traveling exactly as Astrid does. I also admit to missing out on the experience of picking up a hot stranger from a bar. It does sound like an experience I shouldn’t have missed!
Light hearted humor with a lack of reverence that I thoroughly enjoyed.
4.5

I received a copy of the audiobook from NetGalley and RB Media.½

Gina is a wedding planner, and Ford is a detective - pretty standard rom-com fare. Her family is involved with the Mafia, and Ford is investigating. He becomes involved with Gina when she finds a body in her attic. It really is a pretty typical romance, so I should like it more, right?
Wrong. First of all, I found out the meaning of Butterface (I had no idea). Gina has a big nose, but the author repeatedly points out how ugly Gina is. I found that distasteful. I get it. But Ford didn't seem to see it as an issue, so while keep hammering on it.
My bigger issue was that Gina seemed a bit desperate and dumb. Ford tells her he must move in with her to protect her from possible murderers, even though the body in her attic died over ten years before. There were other examples where Gina just seems to accept improbable events, even though she's smart enough to run her own successful business. So, this was mostly a fail for me.

Fun, easy read. I liked Clover and Sawyer. The banter between them was amusing and I enjoyed seeing how their negotiations unfolded. The romance was flirty and hot. The plot is overdone, you won't find anything original here, but it was well written and it had me chuckling. 3.5 stars.

The paleontologist heroine is a bridesmaid at her sister's TV reality-show wedding, an event she is dreading due to her acting past. She meets the writer hero, who is the groom's best man and brother, when he offered her a drink. When the heroine hears that her sister didn't want her to be in her wedding, she decides to ask the hero to have sex with her as payback. As the time for the wedding becomes closer, the hero and the heroine spend more time together and began to fall in love with each other.

This is the first book in the DOWNSIDE TO DATING series by Avery Flynn. It features two main characters that have some personal issues that they must go through in this book. The book also has dual perspectives that enriched the whole story. The main characters were likable as a couple and as individuals, though I did like the heroine more than the hero. There were secondary characters that were surprising in their evolution during the story. And I appreciated that there was an epilogue, giving me closure about the main couple. Overall, an entertaining read and I look forward to reading more books in the DOWNSIDE TO DATING series in the future.

Passion Creek was a great short read with a great story line The main character was Josie, she lived in Las Vegas and worked as a waitress but only until she had saved enough money to continue on her dream of being an artist by taking classes in Dry Creek.

On her last night at work she is given a diary from a kind man who had kept it in his possession for 9 years, she thinks nothing of it and takes it, she is then hounded by Snips, a nasty little man and he tells her that her twin brother Cy owes him $40,000. Josie’s dream is falling apart.

She ends up in a bar and has a one night with Sam. Upon leaving Josie drops a piece of paper from the diary, unbeknownst to Josie that the diary was written by one of Sam’s ancestors and that the piece of paper was a map to Rebecca’s Bounty.

Sam thinks Josie only slept with him because of Rebecca’s Bounty even though Josie hasn’t a clue what he is on about. When she finds out though she knows she must find it to get her brother out of trouble. She ends up in Dry Creek and eventually seeks Sam out and discovers hes a nerdy history professor.

Sam tries to stay away but the problem is they cannot keep their hands off each other but Sam still thinks she is only after the bounty and not in him. Will they work it out?

Passion Creek was well written, it had a mix of action, erotic romance and suspense. It was very enjoyable. I liked that the book had an actually story to tell and it wasn’t all about the sexual chemistry.

It is book 3 of the Layton series but it can be read as a stand alone.

Witcha Gonna Do by Avery Flynn
Witchington #1. Paranormal romantic comedy.
Tilda is from the famous Sherwood family, the most powerful family of witches. Using a matchmaker to find a significant other, Tilda is set up with Gil Connolly, her nemesis. Trying again: Gil. Trying a third time: Gil. Is the universe saying something or is it the family matchmaker? When Tilda accidentally screws up her sister’s spell and puts the entire family out of commission, Tilda is glad to have Gil in her corner to help fix the magic gone wrong.

Highly entertaining and great storytelling. I’ll loved the tree that wilted when Tilda didn’t follow Gil into the coffee shop.

Excerpt:
“Not only do I have the magic of your basic couch cushion, I also attract nasty smelling trees.”

Excerpt:
“Then there are the builder gnomes who love to be helpful whether you ask for it or not. The other week, a gnome added a bay window to Mrs Stuckley’s house while she was napping. She’d never asked for it let alone hired the gnomes for the job. Still the gnome crew wouldn’t leave until she paid the bill in M&M’s. But never the red ones.”

In the middle of a divorce from her lawyer husband, Karl, who has been cheating on her, Mallory finds out that her Great Aunt Maggie has left her the house where she spent so much time as a kid. Unfortunately, the house isn't the way she remembers it, and Mallory quickly realizes that before her death, Aunt Maggie had become a hoarder and let her house become an eyesore. When her neighbor, Nick, delivers the news that Maggie's house has violated several HOA ordinances, Mallory adds that to the many other expenses that she can't afford.

Back in the Burbs is a humorous novel about a woman trying to overcome years of oppression by finding her voice and her future. It is easy to question many of the decisions Mallory makes as she tries to figure out what she wants out of life. Quirky supporting characters add to the story, but it would have been nice to see even more of those characters throughout the book. Also, the romance between Mallory and Nick is an important part of the plot, but it takes a backseat in this novel that is more women's fiction than romance. Overall, Back in the Burbs is a fun story with interesting characters and a satisfying conclusion.

I didn't hate this novel but I didn't love it either. The beginning was a bit annoying and I admit I did some skimming throughout the bla bla bla parts but there were some really funny moments in this book. I chuckled and teared up a couple times, so maybe I shouldn't be too rough on this novel. If what you're looking for is a light, easy, quick read then this is the book for you! Mallory was finally becoming a character that I could like so it would be interesting to see where she goes in her life.

A fun-filled romp with good witches, bad witches, a witch who bemoans her lack of magic, an ornery unicorn shapeshifter, enough heat to keep a castle warm in the dead of winter, salty language and a funny plot. Quick and enjoyable read.

Lighthearted romantic suspense. A popular fashion blogger is in need of a bodyguard when her stalker turns deadly. The bodyguard she hires though, has a few secrets of his own.

I enjoyed this. It's nothing particularly new for the genre but it was an alright read. The mystery was straightforward with a slight twist and the romance was the usual instalove with lots of steam. I liked the main characters, Sylvie and Tony, although I wouldn't say I had any strong feelings for either. I liked the fashion quotes at the start of each chapter, my favourite was;

“Girls do not dress for boys. They dress for themselves, and of course, each other. If girls dressed for boys, they’d walk around naked at all times.” —Betsey Johnson

Flynn, Avery. High-heeled Wonder (Killer Style Book 1) . Entangled Publishing, LLC. Kindle Edition.

And some of the lines were pretty amusing too. I was rather fond of this one;

Tony scanned the crowd for signs of trouble, but the only danger he saw was the distinct possibility of Sylvie clocking her dance partner. Hell, he’d met rabid pit bulls with more love in their eyes than she had at that moment.

Flynn, Avery. High-heeled Wonder (Killer Style Book 1) . Entangled Publishing, LLC. Kindle Edition.

And props for the Miss Congeniality reference.

“If I say run, get your ass out through that window and call Ryder. If you can’t escape, fight like hell until I can get to you. Remember that old FBI beauty pageant movie? Solar plexus, instep, nose, groin.” She gave him a well-duh look. “I’m a fashion blogger. I have that movie memorized.”

Good advice for any female.

Overall it was a fun read. 3.5 stars, rounded to 3.

Adult Contemporary Romantic Suspense
Has editing errors.
It was okay. The main characters are interesting but never reach full development. There are a few intriguing areas, but the story in whole lacks complexity.
I am on the fence on this one. It is interesting enough to make me a little curious about book 2, but not enough to make me rush to get it.
