Sobre El Autor

Gabriel Fitzmaurice is from Moyvane, County Kerry. In 2007 he retired as school principal from the local primary school where he taught for more than thirty years. He has written more than fifty books, including poetry collections in English and Irish as well as several collections of verse for mostrar más children. He has translated extensively from Irish and has edited a number of poetry anthologies. He has published two volumes of essays and collections of songs and ballads. His poems have been set to music and recorded by Brian Kennedy and by Cr na ng with the RT National Symphony Orchestra. Poems I Wish I’d Written is Gabriel Fitzmaurice’s selected translations from Irish. Editor, with Declan Kiberd, and principal translator of An Crann Faoi Bhláth/The Flowering Tree (contemporary poetry in Irish with verse translations), of Irish Poetry Now: Other Voices and of An Bealach ‘na Bhaile/Homecoming (Selected Poems of Cathal Ó Searcaigh), Fitzmaurice is regarded as one of the best translators into English of poetry as Gaeilge. Poems I Wish I’d Written gathers his favourite translations from the above anthologies together with new translations of Cathal Buí Mac Giolla Ghunna and Raifteirí and includes his much admired translation of ‘An Phurgóid’ by Micheál ÓHairtnéide (Michael Hartnett) together with translations of Máirtín ÓDireáin, Seán ÓRíordáin, Máire Mhac an tSaoi, Caitlín Maude, Áine Ní Ghlinn, Michael Davitt, Gabriel Rosenstock and others.… (más)
