This was a good book, well-written with compelling characters, a plot that isn't either too transparent or too opaque and definitely not cliche. However, I won't be reading any more books in the series just because the violence was so pervasive. It was a bit much for me.½

Rafferty is suckered into aiding and abetting in a murder and of course it all goes downhill from there. The writing itself is not bad and I can see a reader getting caught up in the humor and the characters but there was way too much inconsequential filler that does absolutely nothing to advance the story. About halfway through I found I had to go back and reread to see if by some chance I had missed something. I also found that the "romance" lines between Rafferty and Hilda would have better suited a couple in high school than two middle aged adults.

Fifteen years have passed since policeman Rafferty saved Vivian Mollison life from a crazed junkie. Now he is being employed as a private investigator by her parents to trace the bikers who had recently 'kidnapped' her and left her stranded.
An enjoyable quick and easy read, with some likeable wise-cracking characters.

Rafferty is on holiday, alone on a boat. It starts well as he is accused of the murder of Cynthia Lawson, then gets beaten up. This makes him involved. But why was she killed and by whom.
An entertaining crime story

I simply love this book. A classic hard-boiled PI story, with its inherent humour, sarcasm and fast-paced action, the plot in this one is gloriously original, and source of endless entertainment.

I love the relationships between characters: Hilda is an awesome partner for Rafferty, and Lieutenant Ed Durkee is a fantastic friend. All the characters are interesting, and the writing simply superb.

A truly engaging book, and a series I'm more than willing to keep reading.

Another gem by Mr Duncan's pen.

If you love noir PI novels, witty dialogue, great characters and a page-turner suspense, this is for you. Me? I know I can't ever have enough Rafferty.
