A wonderful ending to a terrific series. I will truly miss these characters, especially "SIR".
My only hope is that the Author will continue with a series for Cassie and Thornton
And perhaps they will carry on with more intriguing mysteries to solve.
Goodbyes are never easy.

Taken to the Grave by Cara Devlin
Bow Street Duchess Mystery #7

Goodbyes are never easy and saying goodbye to this series will be difficult. Then again, there are a couple of promising characters introduced in this series that soon will have a book of their own..perhaps even a series? I wouldn’t mind seeing Cassie and Thornton end up working together as they fall in loved just as Audrey and Hugh did in this series.

This series was a slow burn romance for a couple that never expected to have the opportunity to live and love together and yet eventually found their way to just that. Why? Because Audrey was married already and the social divide between the two was extreme. Reading the entire series is my recommendation as each book builds on the last book and you won’t want to miss anything.

As this book begins, Hugh has stopped working full time for Bow Street now that he is a Viscount. A woman he can’t say no to shows up seeking assistance in finding her missing niece who everyone believes has eloped. Unsure what to think, Hugh and Audrey end up working together to find out where this woman is and what might have happened to her. As they sleuth they find a body, a number of clues, some murderers, learn of a secret society, and eventually find answers that save some but not all while taking into custody some very evil people.

I enjoyed seeing the characters that have been there throughout: Sir, Basil, Greer, Carrigan, and others. The way the lives of these characters are working out is fun to see. I loved that Hugh and Audrey do get their chance at happiness, put behind them some of their worries, there are no strings left hanging, and in the epilogue there was a glimpse into their lives a year down the road.

I loved this series, the characters that populated it, the murder mysteries solved, and the believable enduring love between Hugh and Audrey that leaped off the page. This is a couple that I would like to meet and be friends with.

Thank you to the author and BookSirens for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Nature of the Crime by Cara Devlin
Bow Street Duchess Mystery #6

Excellent addition to the series ~ Couldn’t put it down!

What I liked:
* Audrey: dowager duchess of Fournier, has been traveling in Europe for five months with her sister-in-law Cassie, in love with Hugh, enjoys solving mysteries, intelligent, impulsive, possesses paranormal psychometric abilities, is accused of a murder she did not commit, her life is in danger
* Hugh Marsden, Viscount Neath: ex-principal Bow Street officer, scandal in his past, good friend of Dr. Thornton, well-educated and eloquent, protective, intelligent, accepting, intriguing, in love with Audrey and plans to marry her when she is finished with the mourning period
* Sir: born with the name Davy Given, a young man from the streets befriended and employed by Hugh as his assistant, savvy, capable, resourceful, intelligent, growing up quickly, stays away from his abusive father
* Thornton: physician, Hugh’s friend, compassionate, capable, supportive, widow that loved his wife, intriguing, might be interested in Cassie
* Cassie: Audrey’s sister-in-law, had a misfortunate situation to deal with in a previous book that has left her less than willing to trust men, looking forward to seeing what her future holds in store for her, she may be interested in Thornton
* The mystery of who actually killed three men and how it tied into previous books in the series
* The romance developing between Audrey’s lady’s maid and her driver
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* That all the threads of the story were tied up neatly by the end of the book
* Looking forward to the next and possibly final book in the series that will be published later this year

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how evil and selfish the bad guys were

Book 5 did not disappoint as the relationship between High and Audrey reached new heights. Cassie, Greer and Carrigan, Grant and Sur’s characters are brought along as well in this book. You now have a feel for where the author may head with some of the tried and true characters. Things start to get toasty between High and Audrey, it can no longer be hidden. Audrey’s sister finds herself in deep trouble for this book of the series, and with Hugh’s help, Audrey ventures across the countryside to hunt down her sister. Little did Audrey know she was connected to Millie in ways she never understood. There are relationships repaired, others destroyed forever, happy news and new ventures to be found. Can’t wait to see what happens after the mourning period ends and the kind of trouble Audrey finds herself in next.

So many secrets are finally revealed in book 4 of the Bow Street Duchess Mystery Series. Audrey and Hugh find themselves running in so many directions in order to prove his innocence of a crime committed at a local soirée. Though working to solve the same crime, the underlying secrets cause strife and confusion. All comes to light, as well as, so many changes in the life of our Bow Street officer and Audrey and Phillips’s lives. Continue reading to learn all that has been a mystery in past books. Audrey’s bravery and audacity for seeking out the truth can only be matched by Thornton, the Magistrate, and Sir all working to clear the good name of Hugh. In this book Philip drops his own bombshell, leaving Audrey to determine how she can be with the one she loves. Curl up, take all the time you need and travel back in time to London circa 1800’s

Just finished book 3 in the Bow Street Duchess Mysteries. Cara Devlin’s book Silence of Deceit did not disappoint. I love watching the dynamics develop between Audrey and Hugh as a secret from her past is threatening to come to the surface. Not just for Audrey, but several others. Hugh works tirelessly to keep her secret safe and unknown from Bow Street officers. If you are a Deanna Raybourne and Tasha Alexander fan, check these out and enjoy a strong determined protagonist that has met her match in Officer Marsden. Will anything develop with them? #historicalmysteries #strongwomencharacters

he adventures with the Duchess and the Bow Street officer continue in book 2 as He is summoned to the countryside. All is not peaceful or serene on the grounds of leisurely living for the wealthy when the Duchess’ dear friend Charlotte is pushed into the quarry and killed. Together once again the duo work using the skills of the officer and the duchesses special skills to piece together both old deaths of her former beau and his latest wife. Who could be killing off these women carrying their own secrets, why do they want them dead? With both a hot pursuit of the killer, and the spaces between the officer and duchess heating up, you will be kept guessing on who has been disturbing the tranquility of the countryside for the wealthy.

I just love a book with a feisty protagonist that does not allow herself to be defined by societies limitations on women roles. If you love Tasha Alexander and Deanna Raybourne, check out this series, definite similar vibes of strong woman lead, dismissing the constraints put on her by 1800 society rules.
When the duchesses husband is found next to a murdered victim if the Opera House, tongues in their social circle wag at what should be an open and shut case. But the Duchess will not believe her husband had anything to do with such a crime and joins forces with the reluctant Bow Street detective with a few secrets and grudges of his own. The pair tackle the seedy side of society to uncover the many secrets. We’re those sparks starting to fly underneath the heated words of the duchess and the officer? Can they free her husband without the secrets being revealed? Will he even help them uncover the truths or must they overcome every obstacle themselves? The Duchess definitely has the tenacity to go as far as she needs, unless the officer continues to try and thwart her progress by getting in her way. I can’t wait to see where this series leads.

Bow Street Duchess #5

Excellent addition to the series with the ongoing slow burn sizzle of attraction between Audrey and Hugh finally catching fire as they solve another mystery. I couldn’t put it down and cannot wait to see what happens next!

What I liked:
* * Audrey: dowager duchess, married in name only for four years, has been attracted to Hugh throughout the series, loves solving mysteries, intelligent, impulsive, possesses paranormal psychometric abilities, has a big secret that she will share with Hugh
* Hugh: ex-principal Bow Street officer, scandal in his past, good friend of Dr. Thornton, well-educated and eloquent, protective, intelligent, accepting, intriguing, in love with Audrey, dealing with being the new Viscount Neatham after finding out he and not another was the legitimate heir
* Sir: born with the name Davy Given, a young man from the streets befriended and employed by Hugh as his assistant, savvy, capable, resourceful, look forward to seeing more of him in future books
* Thornton: physician, Hugh’s friend, compassionate, volunteers time to the underprivileged, capable, supportive, widow that loved his wife, intriguing, might be ready to leave mourning and perhaps might be interested in Cassie
* Cassie: Audrey’s sister-in-law, had a misfortunate situation to deal with in the previous book that has left her less than willing to trust men, looking forward to seeing what her future holds in store for her
* Audrey’s in-laws who seem supportive, kind, and caring
* Millie: Audrey’s sister, widow, mother of four children, loved another but married off to someone else, has potential for true happiness, isn’t as horrible as she seemed in previous books
* The supporting characters Greer, Carrigan and Basil
* The plot, setting, pacing and writing
* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* The person doing the kidnapping, Audrey’s mother and uncle, and thinking about bigotry must have impacted people of color

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely!

Talk about an exciting read! We have another great mystery that will keep you guessing from page to page – perhaps not guessing about the who, but certainly the why. Then, there is Audrey and Hugh’s romance – there is lovely movement there, but I’m still apprehensive that Phillip will mess things up. That man just needs to REALLY die because pretending just doesn’t solve the moral issues for me.

This story picks up about four months after the last book ended. They received word about three months prior that Phillip had died after being lost in the sea after a storm. Audrey has spent the months since with Phillip’s brother and his wife – the new Duke and Duchess. Phillip’s family is mourning him deeply and, as usual, Phillip has left Audrey to clean up the mess and feel the guilt of not telling his family the truth.

The new Duke and Duchess are having a house party as the first entertainment since they were elevated, so Audrey is leaving their estate and heading back to Fournier. Not long after she leaves the estate, her driver discovers an abandoned coach on the side of the road – not only abandoned, but the driver is dead – shot. The passengers are missing, so Audrey decides to use her ‘gift’ to see if she can determine to whom the coach belongs and perhaps what happened. Shocker! The coach belongs to her estranged older sister, Millie, Viscountess Redding, and she’s been abducted – and . . .

Luckily, Hugh is attending the house party. Even though he is now a Viscount, he still has his sharp investigative talents – and besides – he misses it. Despite what is deemed appropriate and proper for a grieving spouse, Hugh and Audrey work together to find and hopefully rescue Millie from whoever has abducted her. They fear the worst when there is no ransom note and Millie’s maid is found floating in a nearby river.

Why would someone kidnap Millie? Why is there no ransom note? What does a ring with a very rare and valuable diamond have to do with it? Will they find Millie? Will she be alive if they do? Oh! My! Goodness! You’ll just have to read the book to find the answers to all of those questions – and more.

I can definitely recommend this book and this series. I will say that this probably wouldn’t be best read as a standalone book as you would be missing some very pertinent facts. I loved that we had more page time with some of the recurring characters and it was great to spend time and get to know them a bit more. Should you choose to read the book, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. Happy Reading!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have been totally smitten by this author’s virtuoso performance in creating mysteries that perplex and characters that endear. Each book in the series has provided us with a pulse-pounding fast-paced mystery and a further look at the slow-burn romance between Audrey and Hugh. How smitten am I? Well, I’m still reading the series even though I have very strong feelings about adultery no matter the reasons behind it.

We’ve met – and not loved – Hugh’s estranged, dysfunctional family. In this book, we are dealing with them directly because Hugh’s half-sister has been murdered – and Hugh is the accused. Well, WE all know Hugh didn’t do it – and Hugh’s close friends know he didn’t do it – but Bow Street is another matter. They are looking for him everywhere. Can he keep out of their clutches and find his sister’s murderer – and also track down the truth of the story she told him shortly before she was murdered?

Audrey, Duchess of Fournier, and her husband Philip, discovered the body of Hugh’s sister Eloisa just after her death. When Audrey learns Hugh is being sought for the murder, she knows she has to help him. She also knows Bow Street will be watching her every move because of her friendship with Hugh. How can she escape them and find Hugh? How can she help him? Can she solve it on her own?

You’ll be holding your breath throughout the fast-paced, spine-tingling tale that has plot twists that spin the whole narrative on its head. Audrey and Hugh must work together to thwart Bow Street, find a murderer, and untangle a web of lies and deceit that has been almost 30 years in the making.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and this series. By the way – I highly recommend you read the series in order to get the full feel for Audrey, Hugh, Philip, Sir, and Audrey’s secret that she must keep hidden from the world. However, as much as I’m loving it – I’m also questioning where it is going. I have strong feelings about infidelity of any sort, for any reason, and in my view, Hugh and Audrey are just there – right on the edge. So, how is this author going to manage to deal with the duke in a way that will allow Hugh and Audrey to have a true HEA? The duke makes a suggestion in this book – but, for me it wouldn’t work. Neither would him dying because that would hurt Audrey. So, I’m anxious to see what is going to happen in the next book.

Anyway – this is a finely told tale and I hope you will love reading it!

Silence of Deceit by Cara Devlin
Bow Street Duchess #3

Slow… SLOW… S L O W… BURN ~ this series is definitely a forbidden romance that, hopefully, will one day burst into flame but…not quite yet.

What I liked:
* Audrey: Duchess of Fournier, married to her childhood friend and keeps his secret as he keeps hers, extrasensory perception of psychometry, has spent time in an asylum due to her paranormal ability, admirable, strong, intelligent, intriguing
* Hugh Marsden: principal Bow Street officer, well-educated and eloquent, protective, intelligent, accepting, intriguing, intuitive, attracted to Audrey, honorable, compassionate, a good man
* Sir: a young man from the streets befriended and employed by Hugh, savvy, abusive father, poor family, cocky, intelligent, protective, cared for by many, hope that Hugh will be able to help him and his family
* Basil: Hugh’s valet, caring, kind, a bit stuck up seeming but a good man and almost a friend to Hugh
* Greer: Audrey’s lady’s maid, wise, strong, sensible
* Dr. Thornton: Hugh’s best friend, doesn’t have as big of a part in this book, hope to see more of him
* The plot, pacing, and writing – really drew me in
* The twists and turns
* The emotional impact of more than one part of the story – made me care and feel part of the story
* The anticipation of possibilities for Hugh and Audrey in the future
* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing how horrible asylums were and how easily people could be put into them
* Having to wait to see what will happen next

Life in the country should be quiet but not for Audrey and the complications grow when Hugh is sent to solve a local murder. The characters and the story are evolving quite nicely in this interesting series. A good start to another interesting Regency mystery series. The protagonists are troubled characters within this very restrictive societal time period. Their teaming to solve crimes is awkward but effective.

* Thornton: physician, Hugh’s friend, compassionate, volunteers time to the underprivileged, capable, supportive, intriguing, someone I want to know more about

Hertfordshire August 1819. When she sees her friend, Charlotte, the Countess of Bainbury running, Audrey, the Duchess of Fournier, follows but finds her dead. Her suspicions lead to Bow Street officer Hugh Marsden being sent to investigate. Obviously with the help of Audrey and her special gift. Van they work together and solve the mysteries.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its likeable and varied characters. (Audrey does grow on you.) A good addition to this series.

Oh, I really loved this book. Everything about it appealed to me; historical, murder, paranormal, romance and mystery.

The Duchess and Hugh become unlikely allies after her husband is arrested for the murder of an opera singer. Hugh is certain he has the right man until the evidence starts to create doubt in his mind. He and Audrey keep crossing paths as she conducts her own investigation and they eventually begin to trust one another and work together. I enjoyed watching them become friends and the spark between them will surely lead to more sexual tension in the next book.

The main characters all have interesting backstories. There is still some mystery surrounding Hugh's past but there is enough to understand his background and it will be interesting to find out more as the series progresses.
I liked Audrey's husband, Philip and it leads me to worry about whether there is an impending death for him somewhere along the line to eventually allow Audrey and Hugh to marry.
Hugh's eyes and ears on the street, the boy he calls Sir, was a cute addition and I hope he gets involved in more cases and is rewarded well.

The murder of the opera singer was brutal. It set an ominous and suspenseful tone to the story as Audrey began her investigations by interviewing people any of whom could potentially be the cold-blooded killer.
I found this book difficult to put down and I finished reading it fairly quickly.
I can't wait until March for the next book in the series, Death at Fournier Downs.

A well-deserved five stars for Murder At The Seven Dials.

Murder at the Seven Dials by Cara Devlin
Bow Street Duchess #1

Excellent introduction to a new series. Couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait for book two.

What I liked;
* Audrey: Duchess of Fournier, married to her childhood friend and keeps his secret as he keeps hers, extrasensory perception of psychometry, has spent time in an asylum due to her paranormal ability, seeks to prove her husband is not guilty of the murder he was arrested for, admirable, strong, intelligent, intriguing
* Huge Marsden: principal Bow Street officer, nanny’s son, Viscount’s by-blow, scandal in his past, good friend of Dr. Thornton, well educated and eloquent, willing to admit mistakes, protective, intelligent, accepting, intriguing
* The respect, friendship, and commitment Audrey and Philip have within their marriage – it has saved them both from a difficult alternative future
* Sir: young lad, poor, enterprising, nose to the ground, works off and on for Marsden
* The writing, plot, pacing, character development, potential of the story
* That it reminded me of some favorite historical mysteries I have read in the past
* The way the real murderer is ultimately found and dealt with
* The intricacies of the relationships that may develop that will involve Audrey, Philip, Hugh, and others
* Reading a new-to-me author I hope will become a favorite

Whispers and hints of things unseen!

Coldly competent Bow street runner meets stubborn Duchess in high indignation over arrest of her husband for murder.
Philip Sinclair, Duke of Fournier has secrets, as does Audrey Sinclair, his Duchess.
Their marriage is that of true friends and in no way was she going to allow Philip to be framed for the murder of the actress / opera singer, Belladora Lovejoy, of the Drury Lane Theatre.
Hugh Marsden, a principal office with the Bow Street runners has his own secrets, not all revealed, but the ton has plenty to say
Belladora, brutally murdered, is some one’s mistress, but whose?
Audrey has an ability that had caused her to be locked away in an asylum, the Shadewell Sanatorium, by her family, thinking her mad.
Objects speak to her. She’s ready to risk all to find the true culprit.
A foray into gaming hells and worse has Hugh on edge and fearing for Audrey’s safety when he’s not cursing her often impulsive actions.
Great start to a new investigative team of Regency times, with the added intriguing aspect of the gift of “sight” for one member. I’m already looking forward to the next in the series!

Many thanks to the author and publisher.
