Sobre El Autor

Jean 'Binta' Breeze is a popular Jamaican Dub poet and storyteller whose performances are so powerful she has been called a 'one-woman festival'. Her poems are Caribbean songs of innocence and experience, of love and conflict. They use personal stories and historical narratives to explore social mostrar más injustice and the psychological dimensions of black women's experience. Striking evocations of childhood in the hills of Jamaica give way to explorations of the perils and delights of growth and change - through sex, emigration, motherhood and age. mostrar menos

Breeze's rhythms and artful use of dialect make this a relaxing and fascinating read. It often feels like you're reading lyrics as opposed to more traditionally depicted poetry, and the mix (fairly even) of short stories and poetry give an intimate glimpse into caribbean life and personalities. I don't usually enjoy poems written in dialect, but Breeze's touch is pitch perfect, and the rhythms of the dialect itself make this is a work of art worth returning to.
