I was supposed to receive a copy of Careers in Sport, Fitness and Exercise as part of the Early Reviewer program, but my copy never found me. Recently it occurred to me to check my library system for a copy and that is the book I’m reviewing.

Careers in Sport, Fitness and Exercise is exactly what it purports to be: a fairly exhaustive guide to choosing and preparing for a job in one of mentioned fields. It is not unlike similar guides, but it rises above many in that the profiles of individuals already working in the fields show people of both genders, multiple ethnicities and a range of fitness levels. This work is appropriate for any high school, college or youth group careers collection.

Very well written and very detailed. There are many opportunities in this field. The book outlines exactly what education is needed and how to proceed. Good for any high school library and college campus library for incoming Freshman.

Okay, so I finally received this book. I was looking through this book and reading some of the job descriptions and what is required for these jobs if you are looking at a career in any of the fields included in this book. I would have to say that this book is very detailed as to what is expected of someone going into any of the fields involving sport, fitness or exercise. I believe this book would make a great research material for choosing a career.

Very thorough review of career options in sports and fitness. Written for the college student trying to decide which direction to pursue. After two introductory chapters 29 specific jobs are examined in six different fields: fitness management; PE/coaching/officiating; sports marketing/management; sports medicine; allied health sciences; and higher education. Highly recommended for all students (and their parents) trying to evaluate options in these fields.

This book provides a basic overview of the career options available to anyone interested in Kinesiology. It goes over a wide variety of jobs that are related to the fitness industry. Most job descriptions contain information on salary, job outlook and entry requirements. Since this book covers a total of 36 different jobs the descriptions are kept short and aren't meant to be exhaustive. This book is a great starting point if you aren't sure of your career choice yet and need a better understanding of the available options.

Careers in Sport, Fitness, and Exercise provides excellent information for those interested in careers in fields like physical and occupational therapy, kinesiology, sports, fitness, and more.

As a librarian for a health sciences university, I know the value of careers in these fields, and the importance of students interested in those fields being able to learn about their careers before investing in the education necessary to achieve them.

This book is laid out nicely, with each chapter addressing careers in a different sector, including "ftiness instruction, personal training, and fitness management", "sport marketing and management", and "sports medicine". Each chapter is then broken down into specific career paths in the field, and includes information on "where you will work", "what you will do", "whom you will work with", education necessary and, importantly, future outlook.

My favorite feature of this book is the snapshot views of professionals in the particular fields. Each blurb gives a picture of a professional, talks a little about what he/she does, and offers advice to would-be professionals in the same field. Likewise, sections on career paths that require further education, such as physical or occupational therapy, give information from students in those degree programs about the knowledge necessary and the demands of the program. This is really a great way to give prospective students insight into those options.

Overall, this is an excellent resource for people interested in career options in sport, fitness, and exercise.

Human Kinetics sent me ACSM's Complete Guide to Health & Fitness instead of Careers in Sport, Fitness, and Exercise, so I will review that book instead. My review and its' link from Amazon.com are below.

This book is written by health and fitness experts about eating and exercising the right way. It is broken down into sections (based on your age and any existing health issues you may have) that can help you get and maintain a healthy lifestyle. After reading this, it makes it seem really easy to start a plan to help me get into shape safely and have a healthy diet for the first time. I'm glad I have this book - I have to give it my highest recommendation.
