Tobias S. Buckell is a Caribbean-born speculative fiction writer who grew up in Grenada, the US, and the British Virgin Islands. He now lives in a small college town in Ohio with his wife, Emily. Buckell was a first place winner for the Writers of the Future, and has been nominated for the John W. mostrar más Campbell Award for Best New Writer and the Nebula Award. The Tangled Lands por Paolo Bacigalupi

It's not only the format (4 novellas, written by two authors, all set in the same world, during the same period) that makes this original, it's the premise of how magic works in this world and how that drives all the plots in these novellas.

All of the stories are about people in desperate situations doing what they need to survive and try to protect the people they love. You end up rooting for them the whole time, fingers-crossed, that things will somehow work out for them. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. All the stories are pretty dark and one is very adult. Which definitely works for me, because I'm almost an adult (it starts around 60 right?).

My wife really loved this collection, especially after I tortured her by having her read The Three Body Problem. Luckily she dropped that a about 3 hours in and jumped into this one, so her trust in me was restored.… (más)

The Runes of Engagement por Tobias Buckell

After magical portals open around the world, NATO and US forces have captured the portals and established bases on the other, magical world, but a Corrupted One keeps sending waves of attackers. That’s all setup: a band of Marines has to get an ally to safety, but weird things keep happening, including the appearance of a Ranger. It’s fun but don’t expect any interrogation of militarism/colonialism (though they end up fighting some greedy Earth humans).

The Alchemist

Prelim Review: Though this is paired with THE EXECUTIONESS, I found myself less enchanted with this book. I emphasized less with the main character in this book then I did with Tana and while the magic was interesting to read about, I found the bitter truths that Tana sought after and fought more intriguing.
