Wondrous and imaginative, and at times deeply scary, The Ocean at the End of the Lane captures the very essence of childhood fear and uncertainty. Greenlight Fiction Book Group
Greenlight Bookstore, Martes, junio 18 en 7:30pm
Tuesday, June 18, 7:30 PM Greenlight Fiction Book Group discusses The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai Led by Greenlight general manager Alexis, this book group discusses paperback fiction on the third Thursday of each month. For June, the group discuses Kiran Desai’s Booker Prize-winning novel The Inheritance of Loss. In a crumbling, isolated house at the foot of Mount Kanchenjunga in the Himalayas lives an embittered judge who wants only to retire in peace, when his orphaned granddaughter, Sai, arrives on his doorstep. The judge’s cook watches over her distractedly, for his thoughts are often on his son, Biju, who is hopscotching from one gritty New York restaurant to another. Kiran Desai’s brilliant novel, published to huge acclaim, is a story of joy and despair. Her characters face numerous choices that majestically illuminate the consequences of colonialism as it collides with the modern world.

Philipp Meyer
Greenlight Bookstore, Miércoles, junio 19 en 7:30pm
Wednesday, June 19, 7:30 PM Philipp Meyer presents The Son Philipp Meyer made an impressive literary debut with his critically-acclaimed first novel American Rust, which landed on the Best of the Year lists of the New York Times, Washington Post, and The Economist, won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and was selected as one of Newsweek’s “Best. Books. Ever.” Meyer’s much-anticipated new novel The Son (already a Greenlight favorite) is a multi-generational epic set in Texas, inspiring comparisons to the work of Larry McMurtry and Cormac McCarthy. Spanning most of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the narrative tells the story not just of the settlement of the west, but of the moral cost of America’s rise to power, and of the people and cultures we have displaced along the way. Meyer reads and discusses his book and signs copies tonight.
