They call themselves the Leopardi Circle -- six members of a writing group who share much more than their works in progress. When Nancy, whose most recently published work is a medical newsletter, is asked to join a writing group made up of established writers, she accepts, warily. She's not at all certain that her novel is good enough for the company she'll be keeping. Her novel is a subject very close to her heart, and she isn't sure she wants to share it with others, let alone the world. But Nancy soon finds herself as caught up in the group's personal lives as she is with their writing. She learns that nothing -- love, family, loyalty -- is sacred or certain. In the circle there's Gillian, a beautiful, scheming, world-famous poet; Bernard, a pompous but lovable biographer; Virginia, a respected historian and the peacemaker of the group, who also happens to be Bernard's ex-wife; Chris, a divorced father and successful thriller writer; and Adam, the youngest of the group, an aspiring novelist who is infatuated with Gillian. And then there's Nancy, an unassuming fiction writer embarking on a new chapter in her own life. They meet to read their work aloud and offer feedback. Over the course of a year, marriages are tested, affairs begin, and trust is broken. Through their complicated relationships, these eccentric characters share their families, their beds, and their histories, and soon find that buried secrets have a way of coming to light. Hearts break and emotions are pushed to the limit in this richly engaging tale of love, betrayal, and literature.… (más)

I enjoyed the characters and the fact that each chapter was written from a characters perspective. As the story progressed, this gave insights that couldn't have been obtained any other way.

The book centers around a writer's group, the Leopardi Circle. The members of this group, their families and the interactions among them make this a delightful read. Love, suspense, infidelity, betrayal, marriage, and divorce. A full gambit of issues that fit well in the novel.

The Writing Circle is on my list of favorite books of all time and is one I will certainly be reading again. I look forward to any upcoming releases from Corinne Demas. ( )

Lover of all things literati, so plucking this book from the "new" shelf and ignoring housework for the weekend was no challenge. The circle of characters kept me highly entertained as their lives connected in odd ways and literary competition came into the picture. Female character portrayals sometimes disturbed me, in a good way though, as the author laid bare on the page every backbiting, jealous and vindictive quality known as negative femininity. ( )

This fascinating story about a writers' group was very complicated, with short glimpses into the lives of intensely different characters, cleverly interwoven. As their paths cross and recross, you come to realize that every turn leads back in some way to Gillian. Gillian—the poet among them—aloof, introverted, self-assured and so selfish as to be mean-hearted.

The unusual structure of the novel enabled the author to reveal Gillian's character through the behavior of others as they reacted to her. My interest in Nancy, whom we first meet as a newcomer to the group, was tepid; I never became fond of Bernard; pitied Adam, and had mixed feelings about the others, but I felt strong sympathy for Paul, Gillian's unhappy, confused step-son. In so doing I believe I fell right into the author's trap—as poor Paul, in a freak accident, becomes the victim of Gillian's irrational behavior. And sadly, too late, Gillian realizes that although she claims to love no one, she almost loved Paul.

Perhaps I enjoyed this story based on a group of writers because I, too, am a writer. I found it to be a good read. ( )

After being invited to join a writing circle, Nancy learns that the world of professional writing is as sharp and biting as the regular social world. In a an experience that alters her view of life, Nancy sees that nothing is really sacred, that everything must be bared to be a successful writer.
