The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is that it's a bit rough--needs editing and a little polishing. Excellent coverage of neoclassicism in DC (and Paris, which had a large influence on DC, as well). Takes a chronological approach and switches back and forth between Paris and DC, but the larger focus is definitely DC. Chapters end with useful notes and pictures, and there is a handy appendix on architects and sculptors who worked in the American classical tradition. This will be a handy resource on this topic for me for a long time. ( ) sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
This book explores the influence of classicism on the public architecture and city-plan of Washington, D.C., with particular attention given to Paris as an important intermediary at certain crucial periods. The roles of L'Enfant, Jefferson and the McMillan Commission are discussed in detail, as are the parts played by Louis XIV, Napoleon Bonaparte and Louis Napoleon on the design of Paris. A comparison of the classical aspects of the two cities reveals interesting similarities as well as striking differences, and demonstrates how a subject unfamiliar to many (the classical tradition) has made a special contribution to the national image of each capital city.
