Gives a new edge to the Beatitudes that perhaps we've lost over the years. ( ) Goodreads Review: Since the earliest days of slavery, African Americans have called on their religious faith in the struggle against oppression. In this book the Beatitudes -- from Jesus' famous Sermon on the Mount -- form the backdrop for Carole Boston Weatherford's powerful free-verse poem that traces the African American journey from slavery to civil rights. Tim Ladwig's stirring illustrations showcase a panorama of heroes in this struggle, from the slaves shackled in the hold of a ship to the first African American president taking his oath of office on the steps of the United States Capitol. Readers of all ages will find this a book to return to again and again for encouragement and inspiration. The Beatitudes is a book that vividly tells the story of how African American leaned on their faith when going through hard times starting from slavery into the Cilvil RIghts Movement. The bold illustrations make way for a rich conversation around notable African American Heroes and historical events. Spoken in the voice of God, the author pledges his commitment to each person as they go through trials and tribulations. Students would be engaged in a history lesson that explores slavery, and important historical events. Learners can also extend their learning by researching the characters in the book. Fifth graders specifically, will be able to identify the accomplishments and contributions of the great heroes that are mentioned in this book. The Beatitudes is a wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated book about slavery and their journey throughout the civil rights movement. You will see how religion played a big part in how they coped and got through these rough and horrific time as African Americans. You will note the many “heroes” of these times as they fought for their freedom. The illustrations in this book are very real and raw. The very first illustration you come across is enough to send chills up your spine. To think of what these poor, innocent people went through just because they were born African American is truly heartbreaking. As you read, you will get to see how God was there and pushed each and every one of them through this difficult time, and never left their side. I would use this book to teach my students about this part of time in America. This book shows all the important heroes in America and sums it up so that children can understand. The only thing I would be uncertain of is the religious aspect of this book. From anonymous slaves chained in the hold of a slaver in the middle passage to the inauguration of Barack Obama as President, Weatherford poetically brings forth vignettes of African Americans who “brought biblical values to bear on the freedom struggle.” She uses the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12) to show the steadfast love of the LORD even during times of painful oppression. Ladwig, as he did with his illustrations for Psalm Twenty-Three and The Lord's Prayer, illuminates Weatherford’s poetry with moving watercolor and pastel, while the text of the Beatitudes runs across the bottom of the page. It’s a very powerful and moving combination. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
