In which the Egyptian cat goddess Bast, dying and neglected, attempts a great comeback. She blames Morpheus for sending her dreams of her moments of greatness--when she still had her supplicants and they have provided her with offerings. Believing that even Morpheus has forgotten her, she turns to the other member of The Endless, Destiny. "Not until I'm certain there is no hope. I have to talk to the one who knows. I haven't forgotten the path...to his garden."I myself wouldn't want to seek out Destiny, in his Garden of eternal possibility and ironclad fate.

She refuses to accept her fate as given to her by Destiny: "I do not need to open my book to know the fate of all gods. You know it well enough yourself. You age has passed, and when you are forgotten entirely you will fade entirely, as all the fancies of man fade in time." Bast then uses the daemon Shade as her instrument of retribution, to avenge the death of one of her own and of a mortal girl to whom she made promises to.

Kiernan has always written her stories with a seemingly haunting quality to it; making one feel sad and horrified at the same time. I loved most the rich story she told of the pact between cats and men, of cats being the protectors of Amon-Ra as he travels; cats came out of the marshes at Ra's behest and stayed since then due to their own choosing.
