Judd Travers becomes even meaner than he was in "Shiloh" when he starts drinking more heavily. He causes non-stop trouble for Marty, Shiloh and his family, until he wrecks his truck driving drunk at night and ends up in the hospital. Even after all the cruel man has done, Marty is still trying to figure out a way to make things right between his family and Travers. ( )

Book Review
After Marty Preston worked that much to get his dog Shiloh, he hoped that his troubles with Judd would done. He was unable to save every dog that Judd abused, but since Shiloh was the one who ran away and found him, Shiloh was the one he loved. Judd, however, has other problems. Anyone who kicks his dogs has issues, and when he starts drinking Marty realizes that Shiloh is in danger again. As hunting season gets closer and Judd begins hunting on Preston’s land, they know that something is almost destined to turn up. All in the great book of Shiloh Season by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor.

Personal Reflection
I think Shiloh Season is a great book for intermediate readers. It has a lot of literary elements that could be introduced or revisited to the readers with the help of the story. I also think it has a great and suspenseful plot that can keep a young reader involved.
Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. Younger Students could discuss a pet or animal they are particularly fond of.
2. Older students could discuss the conflict and why there were such issues.
3. Teacher could briefly teach older students about the literary elements within the book. ( )

By Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

This book will definitely keep you turning the pages. Shiloh is an abused dog that an eleven year old boy named Marty Preston came across. Marty promised himself that he would stay out of everyone’s business. But Marty just couldn’t ignore a dog being abused. He took it upon himself to steal the dog and up comes the name Shiloh. When he is caught he blackmails the dog’s owner into selling the dog to him but Marty has no money. Marty works for the dog’s owner to pay off the cost of the dog. This book is simply wonderful and classic. It teaches the value of hard work and determination.

Classroom extension:

Children could write a short story about hard work they have done that paid off.

children could write about something they loved very much and ending up losing it and how it made them feel.
