An unusual plot, interesting story and a good thriller, the combination that I like.
Despite that the book's so unusual, it doesn't really feel fabricated. It could have happened, although I hope it's purely fiction :-) ( )

Un thriller aux frontières du fantastique et du paranormal, hautement improbable, mais qui sait tenir le lecteur en haleine jusqu'à la dernière page. ( )

I see now that the English blurb is more disclosing about the paranormal aspect of this book. Well, it wasn't in the Dutch blurb, and when I bought this book I'd expected a completely different kind of book.



This book really was a disappointment for me. I never felt engaged with any of the characters and didn't care for the story. And when things take a turn for the paranormal stuff (which I still think is weird, because it starts off as 'normal' thriller) I kind of gave up, and dutifully read the rest of the book, but I was very glad when it was over and didn't enjoy reading it.



I suppose it's no surprise I haven't read any more books by Jean-Christophe Grangé. ( )

Avec ses deux premiers romans, Jean-Christophe Grange avait déjà stupéfié jusqu'aux plus grands maîtres américains (plus de 20 traductions dans le monde entier) et provoqué l'enthousiasme des cinéastes : productions internationales et budgets records pour les adaptations des Rivières pourpres et du Vol des cigognes. Egalement en cours d'adaptation pour le cinéma, Le Concile de pierre va encore plus loin. Il " explose " littéralement les limites du thriller traditionnel.

Diane start een onderzoek naar de omstandigheden van het ongeluk waar zij en haar Thaise adoptiezoontje in betrokken waren. Al gauw stoot ze op een absurd complot waarin allerlei paranormale begaafden op zoek zijn naar haar zoon. Hij blijkt namelijk een soort mysterieuze “verkenner” te zijn van een Tseveense stam uit Mongolië; en is tevens de drager van een belangrijke boodschap. Het hele plot ging voor mij een beetje te ver. Acupunctuur om iemand uit een coma te wekken, hypnose waardoor een vrachtwagenchauffeur op commando in slaap valt en mensen die plots in dieren veranderen, het was gewoon té vergezocht en irrealistisch om een goed boek te zijn.
