Plants of the Black Hills & Bear Lodge Mountains is a color-illustrated guide with 758 photographs covering about 600 vascular plant species residing in the Black Hills of South Dakota & Wyoming. Plants are categorized into four groups, including ferns & horsetails, flowering forbs, grasses & grasslike plants & woody plants. Within these four groups, subjects are arranged alphabetically by scientific names of the family & the species. Each entry includes a description of the plant & its habitat, an account of regional & worldwide distribution & information about plant values to wildlife & human cultures, past & present. A geomorphologic map & overview of vegetation types encountered in the Black Hills is given an introductory section.
