Sweetwater Crossing is a small town on the edge of Pineland civilization, a place where Wildies still rule the dense forests and outlaws are ready to pounce upon the unwary, a land where dogs will be dogs and pigs have to know how to use their tusks.Ex-soldier, hog-without-a-home, Jessun Redstone comes to Sweetwater Crossing a vagrant, yet finds himself drawn to the town and to the beautiful gilt, Abatha Willowbrook, who lives on the wrong side of the river. Troubles in love are the least of Jessun's worries when the dreaded outlaw wolf, Viper Blackfang, and his gang of mongrels and curs decide to take Sweetwater Crossing for their own. The inevitable allusion to The Three Little Pigs comes true with plot, characters, and background. A wolf and his team of bandits take over a straw-built inn, terrorize a small town, ransack a wooden plantation house, and try to attack a sturdily built house/fort of brick. Throughout the overarching plot are vivid images of life and loss, war and peace, redemption and irredeemable corruption. But in the end, love is all.

The characters are somehow all too capable, and while most do survive, this book is intended for a much older audience (teen minimum) than the whimsical Wind in the Willows.

Ren Meves has created a unique society, where size and appendages play as much of a factor as personality. Read and enjoy. ( )

Those who enjoy Brian jacques and Kenneth Grahame will enjoy this book. Think of a Louis L'Amour adventure with animals. A great read for pre-teeens to adults. A must for everyone's gift list. ( )

House of Brick is a must read. A bright, tight, lovely story, with a cast of characters that everyone will get a kick out of. Read it yourself, give it to your kids, tell your friends about it, demand that someone make a movie out of it; it’s hard to imagine anyone not enjoying this return to books that are simply fun to read. This is a new author. From the very first paragraph you won't want to put it down until you have finished it. This is a great read for everyone pre-teen to those of us who are now "senior citizens." ( )
