This edition of the book has been revised with the needs of present-day first-year engineering students in mind. Apart from many significant extensions to the text, attention has been paid to the inclusion of additional explanatory material wherever it seems likely to be helpful and to a lowering of the rigour of proofs given in previous editions - without losing sight of the necessity to justify results. New problem sets are included for use with commonly available software products. The mathematical requirements common to first year engineering students of every discipline are covered in detail with numerous illustrative worked examples given throughout the text. Extensive problem sets are given at the end of each chapter with answers to odd-numbered questions provided at the end of the book. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |

Unfortunately that was not my impression of this book (although ot has gone through several revisions since I read it, so one can hope it has improved). Much of the mathematics is certainly useful to engineers and scientists, but it is not written in an accessible manner. I frequently found myself asking "why" when reading this book, and not finding the answers to my questions.
Most scientists, in any case, would be better starting with something like "practical statistics", and then approaching the pure maths as they discover holes in thier knowledge.
The book is really aimed at those sciences where the pure maths is more essential than the statistics. It is aimed at a definite market - I just did not feel it reached it.
Having said that - your mileage may vary. Maths is strange. Some maths books I just connect with and have no problem with, and others I don't. Other people may have the opposite experience to me though! ( )
