Only hard-core Hump and/or CBI enthusiasts will be compelled by this book... Of which I'm one. The most compelling parts of the story occur when White draws from his personal experiences and recollections. Things seem more suspect when White makes attempts at broader history. In my judgment, he makes many errors.
For example, Claire Chennault didn't have "World War I flying experience" -- Chennault didn't get his wings until 1919; Chennault served as an aviation adviser in China starting in May, 1937 -- not 1939; and the AVG (the Flying Tigers) didn't disband on March 11, 1943 -- they disbanded on July 4, 1942 (Some AVG pilots volunteered for two weeks of additional duty, but the AVG went out of existence at the end of those two weeks. March 11, 1943 is the date the China Air Task Force became the 14th Air Force.)
