Bong-gu and his mother arrive in Seoul from the countryside in the middle of winter. They're from a poor, isolated area, and are looking for Bong-gu's father, who left without a trace. They meet an old man who remembers Bong-gu's dad and they are reunited. Bong-gu's father had come to the capital with big plans but things did not work out - he was too ashamed to show himself again. the most interesting part of this book is the pigeons. They're really great pigeons- not just random background filler, but individual characters who maybe have their own stories outside of this book.

Which would be good, as the story actually IN this book is saccharin sweet and not particularly interesting. ( )

Interesting drawing style, using real pictures as basis. Minimalistic story, tender. ( )

"Sometimes bits of string get caught in the birds' feet. Then, when they perch on electrical wires or in trees, they can no longer fly away, because of the strings that have gotten stuck . . . . In the city life is difficult for everyone, people as well as birds. People, too, often have wires tying them down, stopping them from living . . . the wounds get infected without a person noticing."

A beautiful manhwa about common folk with everyday anguish, trying to get by and go forward and hopefully, one day, impossibly, have the chance to heal. It begins with a dull ache that progresses to a sharp pain and then dissolves in tears, leaving the road open for a slow unfolding, the feeling of joy that comes from feeling safe and loved. It paints our lives and surrounds in colours of water, reminding us to work on finding something to sustain us, and to help each other, and how those are usually the same thing. ( )
