SUMMARY: This book is an informational book about Valentine's day. It explains about how Valentine's day began with Saint Valentine and how the people back then celebrated compared to how people do today.

REVIEW: This book is simple but informative. The pictures would intrigue a young child and it gives examples of comparing celebrating in the past and now. In the back, it also had how to make your own valentines and valentine box. The central message of this book is to be informative and to compare the past to the present.

This book describes the origin of Valentine's day and customs we practice today. It takes us back to ancient Rome, where an imprisoned man named Valentine sent a "love" letter to a girl and then died on February 14, the day we now call "Valentine's Day". It discusses Valentine's Day symbols like hearts, ribbons, and Cupid.

Gibbons book explains the Valentines Day holiday beginning with the history and the traditions of the holiday. This is an appropriate book for children above the age of four to read by themselves. This is a great resource to use on Valentines Day to give your class project ideas while receiving a history lesson ( )

This book is a good introduction to Valentine's day focusing on the history and customs. The illustrations are full of kids having a good time, cards, gifts, and candy. It could be used to talk about giving to others and how it feels good to receive a gift. At the end of the books there are Instructions for making a simple valentine. ( )

Valentine's Day gets Gibbons' treatment--simple, direct, and illustrated with busily bright watercolors, here punctuated with lots of red hearts. Each spread begins with the sentence "Valentine's Day Is . . ., which is completed with a word or phrase that points out a different aspect of the holiday. For instance, "Valentine's Day is . . . a celebration of friendship and love" or "Valentine cards" or "flowers" or "candy." Then each thought is expanded. Sometimes the explanations are a bit truncated; at other times, they are a little off. It seems odd, for example, to talk about St. Valentine being jailed for his religious beliefs (and named a saint) without mentioning his religion. Likewise, the line "Everyone gets lots of cards" seems insensitive to the many children who don't. But mostly this is a good introduction to a holiday that children become aware of early on. The pictures are filled with kids having a good time, and cards, gifts, and candy, and other symbols of the season decorate the pages. Instructions for making a simple valentine are appended Category: Books for the Young--Nonfiction. 2006, Holiday, PreS-Gr. 1.
