"I think our agenda is clear. We are opposed to: government spending, Kennedy kids, seat-belt laws, busing our children anywhere other than Yale, trailer courts near our vacation homes, all tiny Third World countries that don't have banking secrecy laws, aerobics, the UN, taxation without tax loopholes, and jewelry on men. We are in favor of: guns, drugs, fast cars, free love (if our wives don't find out), a sound dollar, and a strong military with spiffy uniforms. There are thousands of people in America who feel this way, especially after three or four drinks. If all of us would unite and work together, we could give this country. . . well, a real bad hangover." "To say that P. J. O'Rourke is funny is like saying the Rocky Mountains are scenic-accurate but insufficient. At his best he's downright exhilarating . . . Republican Party Reptile is as rambunctiously entertaining as a greased pig catching contest. If you can find a funnier writer than P. J. O'Rourke, buy him a brandy, but don't lend him the keys to your pickup." -- Chicago Tribune; "Republican Party Reptile is hilarious. I laughed so hard reading this book that my armchair needs reupholstering. P. J. O'Rourke has got to be the funniest writer going, and boy does he go. This is high-octane wit, S. J. Perelman on acid." -- Christopher Buckley.… (más)

Republican Party Reptile: The Confessions, Adventures, Essays, and (Other) Outrages of... by P. J. O'Rourke (1995)
  arosoff | Jul 10, 2021 |
At his best P.J. O'Rourke is one of the funniest, sharpest writers around. "Republican Party Reptile" however has the feel of a bunch of disparate articles thrown together in a money making attempt (which undoubtedly it is).

There are a couple of stories which are mildly amusing but there's quite a bit of filler as well ... ( )

One of the funniest things I have ever read in my life. "High Speed Performance Characteristics of Pickup Trucks" is probably my favorite. ( )

A boy is hitchiking on a country road. A car stops for him, and the driver asks "Are you a Republican or a Democrat?"

"Democrat," says the boy and the car speeds off.

Another car stops and the driver asks the boy "Are you a Republican or a Democrat?"

"Democrat," says the boy and the car speeds off.

This happens two or three times, and the boy decides he's giving the wrong answer. The next car that stops is a convertible driven by a beautiful blonde. "Are you a Republican or a Democrat?"she asks.

"Republican," says the boy and she lets him in.

But as they're driving along, the wind from the open top begins to push the blonde's skirt higher and higher up her legs. And the boy finds himself becoming aroused. Finally he can't control himself any longer. "Stop!" he hollers. "I've only been a Republican for ten minutes and already I feel like screwing somebody!"

--popular joke from the 1930's
