This first field guide to North American birds has beautiful color photographs and illustrations. It is appropriate for ages 8-adult. It is easy to read with short descriptions of each bird. The material is organized clearly and features sections of avian anatomy, migration, and endangered birds. It also includes explanations about how birds fly and where they lay their eggs. The field guide is organized by types of birds with easy identifiable icons and names in the upper corner of each left hand page. There are maps on each page with highlighted regions of their locations and the type of habitat where each bird is found. At the end of the book, there is a glossary and the fifty state birds, resources for further reading, organizations, and web sites. Although the birds are not listed individually in the table of contents, the index is organized clearly which makes locating specific birds easy. ( )
