In the wedding service two people declare their solemn commitment to each other before a congregation of witnesses, friends and relations. This book contains the full text of the marriage service, in all common forms. First, the poetic and historical text from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, then a modern version, devised in 1977, whose language is one of directness and clarity. I picked up this book out of curiosity at a recent booksale. I had recently read a book arguing against marriage (I forget what it was called) and thought I'd read something from the other side of the argument. I didn't realise this was a christian book when I picked it up and probably wouldn't have bothered if I had realised. I decided to read it anyway and see what it had to say.

Most of the book seemed like pretty standard advice on improving communication which I've read in other places before. Although the relationship advice seemed good the argument in favour of marriage itself failed to convince me since it was mainly for religious reasons, basically because god says so.

The reason I gave this book only 2 stars is because of the very resticted view of relationships it gives. Read this book if you are Christian and you feel happy with such statements as "Sex is designed by God to be an expression of the exclusive and committed relationship between a man and a woman" and "We shall not be dealing with...the discovery that a husband or wife has homosexual tendencies... If you identify with one of the issues above, do not give up. We know many who, through a new discovery of the love and power of god, have found healing for their past and hope for the future". If like me you find statements like this creepy and having no place in a book about love then I'm sure there are plenty of other books out there which are far better and more inclusive. ( )
