Harris, a hare, is self-conscious about his very big feet. His grandfather steps in and demonstrates to Harris all of the wonderful things his feet help him do. He can hop very high, he can dig very deep, and he can run away very quickly from dangers. This picture book tells a story of acceptance and gaining independence through Harris who will be relatable to many children looking to gain those things. The two dimensional, watercolor-like images of the brown Harris and his grey elderly grandfather are presented on basic warm, earthy backgrounds with minimal text. Harris learns valuable lessons in this book that he will pass on to young readers: accept yourself, take the advice of your elders, and learn to be independent. This book is recommended for preschool, early elementary school, and home libraries because children will learn important messages through two cute and relatable characters.
Beverley Fahey (Children's Literature) Harris the hare is dismayed by the size of his feet. His loving grandfather proudly shows him all the wonderful uses of big feet. With them, he can spring high in the air. Their strength will enable him to go the mountains to observe the birds. He can dig a hole to rest from the heat, and they will allow him to run fast, very fast. Grandfather quietly explains that he is old now, and it is time for Harris to run and explore on his own. Sparse text leaves plenty of room for the delightful watercolor and ink drawings. The hares fill the pages, looming large and giving evidence of their big feet. Rayner uses unusual perspectives to convey her point of view and show motion. She adds humor (Harris uses his feet as a sun shade) and apprehension (the shadow of a menacing wolf) in this lesson on the appreciation of size. Whether viewed as a life lesson or a lively tale of a winsome rabbit, this book is satisfying either way. 2008, Good Books, $16.95. Ages 4 to 7.
