Cult poet and musician Mike Doughty makes his print debut withSlanky, a black-comic stroll through the demimonde of pop culture and modern urban life. Doughty's poems are at once absurdest and matter-of-fact; the images he conjures are thrown into high relief through cutting wordplay. In a series of prose poems about showbiz, he re imagines Cookie Monster as a burned-out suicide, and cheesy talk-show host Joe Franklin as a cross-dressing witness to the apocalypse. Poetry makes great bathroom reading. In case you didn't know Doughty is/was the lead singer for the band Soul Coughing. They had some really creative music/lyrics (think Cake) and so I figured this would be interesting. It was much more comprehensible than Serg Tankian's poetry but still didn't blow me away. There's the occasionally cool turn of phrase or piece of imagery but nothing very memorable. As I said with Serg's book (though differently), I understand how much this poetry is part of the author's life (in the time that he wrote it). In other words I get it, but it really doesn't do much for me because it's not mine. ( )

Oh, Mike Doughty. You write beautiful poems and generally put them to music. This is a collection of poems that he didn't turn into an album and they are pretty fantastic. Read them. And then go out and buy Mike's albums and listen to them. ( )
