MacDonald Ross legt meer nadruk op de spanning tussen Leibniz en Newton, dan op die tussen Leibniz en Spinoza (die 'De ketter en de hoveling' beheerst). Naast zijn filosofische systeem (als het zo al genoemd mag worden), schetst het boek immers ook de wetenschappelijke inzichten van Leibniz.
